Park Overview

Situated in southwest Austin, Dick Nichols District Park covers 152 acres in southwest Austin. The park is open daily from 5AM-10PM and attracts a mix of families, fitness enthusiasts, and those seeking a bit of nature.

Trails and Exercise

The park's 1.2-mile paved trail loops around the perimeter, good for jogging, walking, or biking. Thanks to some well-placed trees, you'll find decent shade along parts of the trail - helpful during hot Texas summers. If you're looking to level up your workout, check out the exercise equipment stations dotted along the path.

The park connects to the Violet Crown Trail system, providing access to miles of additional hiking and biking trails. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and seasonal treats like vibrant wildflowers in spring and beautiful Yaupon Holly that puts on a show around February.

Family Amenities

Kids will make a beeline for the large playground area with equipment suitable for different ages. The main play zone features a sun shade (parents rejoice!) and safety-focused rubberized surfacing. Between the swings, slides, and unique climbing structures, there's something to delight both toddlers and older children.

When hunger strikes, head to the covered pavilion with plenty of picnic tables - well-suited for family gatherings or birthday celebrations. If you prefer a more secluded spot, additional picnic tables are scattered around the park, many tucked under the cooling canopy of mature oak trees.

Water Recreation

Cooling off is easy at Dick Nichols Park thanks to its public swimming pool that won't cost you a dime during operational months. The pool area includes both a main pool and a shallow wading pool that's just right for the littlest swimmers. Near the playground, you'll find a splash pad where younger children can giggle their way through refreshing water play on hot days.

Sports Facilities

Sports enthusiasts have plenty of options here. The tennis courts double as pickleball courts with appropriate line markings, while basketball courts and sand volleyball courts round out the offerings. The tennis/pickleball courts are well-lit for evening games, but you might need to wait your turn after 5PM when they tend to get crowded. There's also an open field that's meant for impromptu soccer matches, rugby scrimmages, or frisbee tossing.
