About the Location

Historic Significance

Just two miles northeast of downtown Austin lies Rosewood Neighborhood Park, a 13.9-acre green space with a story to tell. Established in 1929, this park carries a profound legacy as Austin's first public space created for African Americans during segregation.

The park emerged from part of a 40-acre homestead belonging to local merchant Rudolph Bertram. A charming limestone house built in the 1870s still stands on the property, later transformed into a recreation center that continues to serve the community.

A Community's Heart

Throughout the decades, Rosewood Park has been a patch of grass that's also been the beating heart of East Austin. From sports leagues and concerts to pageants and holiday celebrations, these grounds have witnessed countless community moments.

The park has hosted Austin's annual Juneteenth celebration since its very beginning. This commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans remains a meaningful gathering that continues to this day.

Growth Through the Years

The Great Depression, while challenging, actually brought positive changes to Rosewood. Thanks to funding from the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and Works Progress Administration (WPA), the park received new roads, lighting, and even a bandstand.

A significant addition came in 1944 with the construction of the Doris Miller Auditorium, named after a Texas native who became the first African American awarded the Navy Cross. Music lovers might appreciate knowing this venue was once a popular stop on the "Chitlin' Circuit," welcoming legendary performers like Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie.

Modern Legacy

In the summer of 1963, Rosewood Park quietly integrated alongside other Austin city pools and parks. Today, it continues to serve the community while preserving its cultural heritage.

The park's historical significance received formal recognition in February 2019 when it was named a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation & Parks Society - an honor acknowledging its special place in Austin and Texas history.

Recreation for Everyone

Whether you're a sports enthusiast or just looking to spend time outdoors, Rosewood has something for you. Tennis courts and dedicated pickleball courts offer plenty of fun, though you might want to arrive early on weekends to secure your spot as they've become quite popular.

You'll also find a well-maintained basketball court and baseball field for team sports. When the Texas heat becomes too much, head to the indoor gymnasium with air conditioning for a comfortable place to stay active.

Cool Off in the Water

The impressive swimming pool holds a whopping 450,000 gallons of water with depths varying from 3 to 11 feet. Attentive lifeguards keep watch, and shower facilities are available for before and after your swim.

For the little ones, a splash pad provides refreshing fun during those scorching Austin summers. There's limited seating (just two large rocks), so you might want to bring a folding chair if you plan to stay a while.

Family-Friendly Features

The playground at Rosewood is spacious and features various equipment suited for different age groups. Children can explore and play while parents relax nearby.

Hungry after all that activity? Several picnic areas are scattered within the grounds, many offering welcome shade from the Texas sun - meant for family lunches or community gatherings.

Getting Around

The park connects to the Boggy Creek Trail, making it easy to extend your outdoor adventure if you're walking, jogging, or cycling. If you get caught in unexpected rain, the Pleasant Valley Bridge along the trail offers a convenient shelter.

Don't have a car? No problem. Rosewood Park sits conveniently near a bus stop, making it accessible via public transportation for everyone to enjoy.
