About the Location

Park Overview

Situated in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Austin, Texas, Earl J Pomerleau Pocket Park is a two-acre green oasis that opened its gates in July 2023. This cozy community space sits in District 4 and has quickly become a cherished addition to the Windsor Park/University Hills area.

Development History

The story of this park began back in 2018 when the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association scored Design Services for Overall Park Planning from the Austin Parks Foundation. What makes this park special is that it wasn't just dropped into the neighborhood - locals actually helped shape it through community meetings and surveys.

By 2019, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department adopted the final design plan, which struck a nice balance between preserving natural elements and adding features that the community wanted.

Features and Amenities

The layout here is thoughtfully done, blending maintained grassy areas for flexible use with a preserved native meadow. If you're looking to get some steps in, a winding loop trail and connecting walkways offer perfect paths for a leisurely stroll or morning jog.

Kids will love the modern playground that's smartly divided into age-appropriate zones. The larger structure for older children is more adventurous (and needs a bit more parental supervision), while little ones have their own toddler-friendly playscape.

Planning a get-together? You'll find BBQ pits around the park that are meant for family cookouts or neighborhood gatherings. Dog parents will appreciate the dog water fountain - a thoughtful touch for four-legged visitors.

A recent addition came in early 2024 when a generous individual donor funded a pavilion. This shaded structure now represents a community hub where neighbors can gather and connect.

Location Features

Parents can breathe easy knowing the playground sits well away from street traffic and is partially fenced for added safety. When the Texas sun beats down, you'll be grateful for the numerous shade trees that dot the landscape.

Funding and Dedication

This community space came to life thanks to a mix of funding sources, including ACL Board Designated Funds, an Urban Forestry Grant, and City of Austin Parkland Dedication Fees.

The park honors Earl J. Pomerleau, whose work in alcohol and drug education made a lasting impact in Central Texas and Mexico. He's credited with bringing comprehensive alcohol treatment to Austin and establishing more than 150 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings throughout the area - a legacy that continues to touch many lives.
