About the Location

Park Overview

Earl J Pomerleau Pocket Park is a two-acre green space located in the Windsor Park neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The park, which opened to the public in July 2023, is situated in District 4 of the city.

Development History

The development of Pomerleau Pocket Park began in 2018 when the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association was awarded Design Services for Overall Park Planning by the Austin Parks Foundation. This initiative allowed community members to participate in the park's design process through a series of community meetings and surveys.

The final design plan, adopted by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department in 2019, aimed to preserve the park's natural amenities while incorporating new features to serve the community.

Features and Amenities

The park's layout combines maintained turf areas for flexible open space with a preserved native meadow. A meandering loop trail and connecting walks provide opportunities for exploration and exercise.

The design also includes a shaded playground suitable for children of various ages.

In early 2024, a pavilion was added to the park, funded by an individual donor. This structure serves as a central hub, providing a shaded gathering space for community members.

Funding and Dedication

The development of Earl J Pomerleau Pocket Park was funded through multiple sources, including ACL Board Designated Funds, an Urban Forestry Grant, and City of Austin Parkland Dedication Fees.

The park is named after Earl J. Pomerleau, who made significant contributions to alcohol and drug education in Central Texas and Mexico. Pomerleau is credited with bringing the comprehensive alcohol treatment system to Austin and establishing over 150 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in the area.
