About the Location

History and Location

Formerly known as City Park, this natural haven was renamed in 1984 to honor Emma Long, a trailblazing politician who made history as the first woman to serve on the council of a major Texas city.

Stretching across 1,142 acres along the shores of Lake Austin in northwest Austin, the park offers a sense of retreat - you'll feel miles from civilization while actually being just a short drive from the city center.

Natural Features

With over a mile of Lake Austin shoreline, Emma Long gives you plenty of space to swim, cast a line, or launch your boat for a day on the water.

Oak and juniper trees dot the landscape, providing welcome shade during those scorching Texas summers. If you're patient (and lucky), you might spot deer wandering through, especially as the sun begins to set.

Families particularly appreciate the small sandy beach area with its shallow, kid-friendly waters. The swimming zone is thoughtfully organized with buoys marking where the depth changes - a nice safety touch for parents with little ones.

Recreation Opportunities

Hiking enthusiasts should check out the Turkey Creek Trail, which offers some gorgeous views of the surrounding Hill Country terrain.

If you're into motorsports, the park houses a dedicated motorcycle trail with roots stretching back to the 1970s when the area was established by and for motorcycle trials riders.

Boating fans will appreciate the boat ramps with plenty of trailer parking nearby. On any given summer day, you'll see everything from jet skis to paddleboards to boats cruising the lake's surface.

For those who prefer land-based activities, the sand volleyball courts offer a great way to get active and have some fun with friends.

Camping and Facilities

Whether you're visiting for the day or staying overnight, Emma Long offers various accommodations. Camping options range from primitive tent sites to a limited number of spots with water and electrical hookups.

The campsites are generously sized, and many line the shoreline - nothing beats waking up to those serene lake views and having water access just steps from your tent.

Nearby restrooms and showers serve the beach area. While they're admittedly basic, they're kept clean and offer warm showers - sometimes that's all you really need after a day of outdoor fun.

Picnic Areas and Amenities

You can find picnic tables scattered across the park, many nestled under the shade of towering trees. For larger gatherings, covered picnic areas can be reserved in advance.

Charcoal grills are available at various spots around the park, making it easy to cook up a delicious outdoor meal while enjoying the surroundings.

Note that trash bags are provided at the entrance - a subtle reminder to help keep this beautiful space clean, especially important during those busy summer weekends when the park fills up.

Visitor Information

Weekends and holidays can get pretty crowded, so planning ahead is essential. You should reserve weekend passes online in advance to guarantee entry - nothing worse than driving all the way there only to be turned away.

Entrance fees are $5 per vehicle on weekdays and double to $10 on weekends. Keep in mind there's no re-entry allowed on the same day, so bring everything you need for your visit.

The park welcomes visitors from 7AM to 10PM daily, giving you plenty of time to soak in the natural beauty and recreational offerings.

Your four-legged friends are welcome too! Just remember that dogs must stay leashed in most areas and aren't allowed in the designated swimming zones - rules that help keep everyone safe and happy.
