A Refreshed Downtown Haven

Tucked right in the heart of downtown Austin, Waterloo Park stretches across 11 acres of thoughtfully designed green space. After a decade-long makeover, the park reopened its gates in August 2021, now serving as the northern section of the Waterloo Greenway - a 1.5-mile park system that follows the curve of Waller Creek.

Natural Beauty Meets Urban Design

Walk through Waterloo Park and you can find yourself immersed in a seamless blend of wild and crafted landscapes. The native plant gardens aren't just pretty to look at - they're buzzing ecosystems that attract butterflies and pollinators, offering a little nature lesson with every visit.

The park's terrain has a bit of everything: rolling hills that make you forget you're downtown, winding trails well-suited for a leisurely stroll, and open lawns just begging for a picnic blanket. Perhaps most impressive are the heritage live oak trees scattered across the grounds. Some of these gentle giants have been standing watch for over 200 years, now thoughtfully showcased on elevated decks that protect their roots while inviting you to enjoy their expansive shade.

Where Music Meets Nature

The Moody Amphitheater is the park's main attraction - a 5,000-capacity outdoor venue where live music performances take place against Austin's skyline. Its striking white lattice shade structure isn't just functional; it's an architectural statement that catches your eye from almost anywhere in the park.

The acoustics here are surprisingly excellent, and there's hardly a bad seat in the house. When shows are happening, you can choose your own adventure: grab a regular seat, spread out on the lawn, or treat yourself to the premium section with comfortable Adirondack chairs.

Fun for Everyone

Kids (and let's be honest, adults too) gravitate toward the unique playground with its creative climbing structures. The hillside slide is a particular highlight - simple in concept but delivering that timeless rush that brings out the child in everyone.

Practical amenities haven't been overlooked either. Clean restrooms are strategically placed around the park, especially near high-traffic areas like the playground and amphitheater. Multiple picnic areas offer shaded spots to relax, eat, and people-watch under those magnificent trees. The paths that meander through the gardens provide peaceful moments of escape, and both you and your four-legged friends will appreciate the water fountains dotted throughout this pet-friendly space.

Smart Design for a Growing City

Beyond its beauty, Waterloo Park works hard for Austin. Clever features like rain gardens and bioswales manage stormwater and protect Waller Creek, essentially turning the park into flood control infrastructure disguised as a public oasis.

Sandwiched between the Texas State Capitol, the vibrant Red River Cultural District, and the Dell Medical Complex, this green space provides a nice break from Austin's increasingly dense urban landscape. As you walk its paths, you'll catch glimpses of the downtown skyline and notice how the park connects different neighborhoods of the city.
