About the Location

Natural Features

Tucked behind the Cameron County Drainage District #1 Administration Office, Ernesto Gamez Cascade Park welcomes you with its diverse ecosystem and thoughtfully landscaped grounds.

A notable feature is the 40-foot illuminated waterfall that flows down through the landscape. During holidays, the waterfall gets dressed up in twinkling lights, adding an extra touch of magic to your visit. Next to the waterfall is a 13-acre detention pond that functions as both practical water management and a scenic element of the park.

Recreational Facilities

The splash pad area provides a good spot to cool off on warm days. Kids up to 12 particularly love the water arches and slides, however we've seen plenty of adults sneaking in some splash time too (no judgment here!).

Just a heads-up: swimming isn't allowed in the cascade water area. If you're heading to the splash pad, consider bringing water shoes - that concrete can get slippery when wet.

Trails and Accessibility

Getting here is hassle-free with multiple parking lots available. Once inside, you'll find winding walking and jogging trails that meander through palm trees and open spaces - fantastic for your morning exercise or an evening stroll.

Four-legged friends are welcome too! The park is pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your dogs (on leash, of course). You can find dog waste bags stationed across the grounds, making cleanup convenient.

Sports Amenities

For those interested in sports, the park has basketball courts, volleyball courts (two large ones), and a soccer field suitable for both casual play and organized games.

The well-maintained basketball court draws regular players, while the open grassy areas make great impromptu football fields or spaces for casual games with friends.

Family Areas

If you've got kids in tow, you'll appreciate the thoughtfully designed playground equipment scattered throughout the park. The play areas include swings, slides, and separate sections for different age groups, creating safe spaces for the little ones to burn off energy. There are even specially designed swings for children with disabilities.

When it's time to refuel, head to one of the many picnic areas with sturdy tables nestled under shaded pavilions. Planning a cookout? You'll discover grills ready for your outdoor culinary adventures. Many picnic spots even include electrical outlets - handy for charging phones or connecting speakers during your gathering.

Fishing Opportunities

Angling enthusiasts can try their luck at the fishing spots along the detention pond. The bridges and piers are perfectly positioned for casting a line, and there's something peaceful about waiting for the fish to bite here. Local fishers report catching catfish in these waters.

Facilities and Maintenance

When nature calls, you'll discover several clean restrooms around the grounds. They're generally well-stocked with soap and paper supplies - always a relief when spending the day outdoors. The overall cleanliness of the park speaks to the care taken by both staff and community members who value this shared space.

Ernesto Gamez Cascade Park offers a mix of natural features and recreational amenities. This free, family-friendly space is popular with Brownsville locals and visitors for outdoor activities.
