About the Location
Memorial Features
Veterans Park features large concave concrete slabs with engraved names of Brownsville area veterans from World War I to more recent conflicts like Afghanistan. At the center of the memorial are three large flag poles on a concrete base with an embedded star.
The park includes a special memorial to Medal of Honor Recipient and Brownsville native, Sergeant Jose M. Lopez. Created as a project by veterans for veterans, the American Legion aimed to make the park an educational extension of the adjacent city library.
Educational Elements
Two murals showing the locations of conflicts from the 18th century to the present on world maps serve as educational features within the park.
Veterans Park serves as a living monument, with names of both living and deceased soldiers native to Brownsville engraved on granite slabs.
Community Events
The park hosts annual festivities and ceremonies to honor fallen and living veterans, providing a space for remembrance and reflection.
Park Layout
The park is located next to the city library, sharing an entrance drive and parking area. It consists of veteran memorial walls and placards, a multi-purpose lawn, and landscaping.
