About the Location
Natural Escape in Conroe
Covering 110 acres of land, Owen Park provides a natural escape from everyday life. What was once a YMCA facility changed hands when the City of Conroe purchased the property in 2021 for $2.5 million - expanding the city's recreational options.
The park's natural terrain is excellent for outdoor enthusiasts, with winding hiking and biking trails that let you immerse yourself in the area's scenic beauty. If you're looking for a quick nature fix, try the 1-mile route, or challenge yourself with the 2-mile path through the picturesque San Jacinto River bottom.
Anglers will appreciate the fishing pond complete with a T-head pier - it's just the right size to stroll around while searching for that perfect fishing spot.
Wildlife Notes
Keep in mind that Owen Park is very much a natural wildlife area. You might encounter various critters, especially around the pond and along the trails.
If you're planning to explore the trails, it's worth packing thick boots and some mosquito repellent. Nature has its moods too - after heavy rains, some trails may temporarily become off-limits.
Recreation for Everyone
Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home with the park's multi-purpose fields that accommodate everything from soccer matches to football games. The large lighted pavilion with basketball courts provides a great space for both planned gatherings and impromptu pickup games.
Need a moment to catch your breath? You'll find plenty of benches scattered across the grounds. Hungry after all that activity? The park offers picnic tables in several locations, including a spacious covered area with free-standing BBQ grills for those weekend cookouts.
A Paradise for Pups
Owen Park features two separate off-leash dog parks - a smaller area for dogs under 30 pounds and a more spacious section for larger dogs. Both areas are well-maintained, giving dogs a safe space to run free and make new friends.
The dog parks come equipped with benches, tables, and water facilities for your four-legged companions. When you're ready to explore more of the park, the trails welcome dogs too - just remember to keep them leashed outside the designated off-leash areas.
Modern Community Hub
A recent addition is the Westside Recreation Center, a 30,000 square foot facility that opened in January 2023. This modern community center adds to the outdoor experience at Owen Park.
Inside, you'll discover indoor courts for racquetball and basketball with equipment provided, so you can just show up and play. The clean, well-maintained weight room offers options for those looking to mix up their fitness routine. Throughout the facility, accessible and clean restrooms ensure comfort during your visit.
Community Connections
The park occasionally comes alive with special community events, including archery competitions featuring themed targets. These unique activities provide fun opportunities for both kids and adults to try something new.
An unexpected and charming feature of Owen Park is that it houses city police horses - a delightful surprise that often becomes a highlight for children visiting the park.
