About Civic Garden in Dallas
Civic Garden is a 1.7-acre urban park located in the heart of downtown Dallas, Texas. Formerly known as Belo Garden, this green space was transformed from a gray parking lot into a lush oasis that opened to the public in spring 2012. The park's design draws inspiration from the Texas prairie, featuring flowing bands of native and ornamental grasses along with seasonal flowers.
The centerpiece of Civic Garden is an interactive fountain that serves as both a visual focal point and a practical means of relief from the Texas heat. The fountain operates daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., providing a refreshing attraction for visitors. Surrounding the fountain area are more than 100 trees and over 10,000 individual ornamental grasses, shrubs, and flowers, creating a diverse and vibrant landscape.
Civic Garden was created as part of the Dallas Park & Recreation Department's 2004 Downtown Parks Master Plan, which identified the need for more green spaces in the urban core. The park is designed to offer a quiet respite from the bustle of city life, providing residents, workers, and visitors with a place to relax, enjoy nature, and engage in passive recreation activities.
The park features winding pathways that allow for leisurely strolls and exploration of the various plantings. Benches and seating areas are strategically placed throughout the garden, offering spots for rest and contemplation. The park's layout includes open grassy areas suitable for picnicking or small gatherings.
Civic Garden is managed by the Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy in partnership with the City of Dallas. This collaboration ensures ongoing maintenance and programming to keep the park vibrant and well-utilized throughout the year.
