About the Location
Park Overview
Nestled in the heart of Dallas, Lake Highlands Park spans a generous 36.8 acres of green space that's been a community staple since 1930. This expansive park offers a peaceful retreat right in the middle of the Lake Highlands neighborhood, with pleasant natural beauty and nice views. It's a popular outdoor spot for many locals.
Features and Amenities
What makes this park special is how it balances natural elements with practical amenities. No matter if you're looking to break a sweat or simply unwind under the sky, there's room for everyone here. The spacious layout works perfectly for families seeking weekend fun, fitness buffs getting their steps in, or anyone who just wants to connect with nature.
The sports fields host regular soccer and rugby action throughout the year. Weekends get particularly lively when youth soccer tournaments and adult rugby matches bring in cheering crowds. Just a heads up - while these fields are well-maintained, they can get a bit soggy after heavy rainfall.
Playground
Kids have their own dedicated space here with a thoughtfully designed playground that separates areas for the little ones (2-5 year olds) and bigger kids (children 5 and older). The equipment offers plenty of play options to keep the young ones entertained. One thing to note - shade is limited, so don't forget to pack sunscreen during those warmer Texas days.
Wildlife Viewing
Perhaps the most unique aspect of Lake Highlands Park is the chance to spot a bald eagle nest. It's pretty amazing to see these magnificent birds in an urban setting. Nature photographers and bird enthusiasts often come specifically for this experience. There's a bit of a comeback story here too - after the original nest was destroyed by high winds in February 2022, the eagles returned to a new nest in March 2024, much to everyone's delight.
Facilities
The park covers the basics with permanent porta-potty style restrooms that are kept clean. There's a parking lot available, but it can fill up quickly during weekend sporting events, sometimes requiring you to look for street parking instead. You'll come across drinking water stations throughout, and plenty of open areas excellent for spreading out a picnic blanket.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Your four-legged friends are welcome at Lake Highlands Park, but you'll need to keep them leashed - park patrols do enforce this rule consistently. The grassy areas provide plenty of space for your pup to explore while staying connected to you.
Community Significance
As part of the broader Dallas parks network, Lake Highlands Park has been providing accessible green space for nearly a century and has become an established part of the neighborhood.
