About the Location
History and Development
Tucked between St. Paul Street and Harwood Street in the heart of Dallas' City Center District, Pacific Plaza is a 3.7-acre green sanctuary that opened its gates on October 14, 2019. What was once just another downtown parking lot has been transformed into something much more valuable - a patch of nature amid the concrete jungle.
This urban oasis emerged from a citywide initiative to bring more greenery to downtown Dallas, giving locals a place to breathe and reconnect with nature without leaving the city center. A few acres of grass make quite a difference when you're surrounded by towering skyscrapers on all sides.
Design and Features
At the heart of Pacific Plaza lies a generous multi-purpose lawn, bordered by smooth walkways and plenty of spots to sit and unwind. The park features a notable pavilion designed by HKS Architects. This 95-by-138-foot stainless-steel structure tells a story beyond its visual appeal. The perforated panels cast intricate shadows that reference the area's railroad heritage through Morse code patterns representing every local stop along the Texas and Pacific Railroad from New Orleans to El Paso.
The park thoughtfully preserves the existing Aston Grove, a collection of 23 mature live oak trees that previously stood as their own pocket park. These mature trees provide welcome natural shade during the hot Texas summers.
Recreation and Amenities
If you're visiting with kids, you'll appreciate the children's playground complete with swings and seesaws to keep the little ones entertained. Across the park, you'll find tables and chairs great for enjoying lunch outdoors or holding a casual meeting in the fresh air.
Dog owners can bring their leashed four-legged friends along for the adventure. The lush lawn areas also provide ample space for tossing a football, kicking a soccer ball, or playing frisbee when the mood strikes.
Urban Connection
Designed by the talented team at SWA Group, Pacific Plaza strikes a balance between open spaces and practical amenities that serve everyone from local residents to office workers and tourists. The views of surrounding skyscrapers create an interesting juxtaposition - nature framed by architecture.
The park connects to a pedestrian corridor linking other downtown green spaces like Klyde Warren Park and Main Street Garden. Its central location in the business district makes it an easy escape during lunch breaks or after work.
Community Use
Pacific Plaza has quickly become a community hub hosting everything from music festivals to worship nights and family activities. The open layout makes it naturally suited for public gatherings that bring people together.
Open 24 hours a day, the park offers a peaceful retreat from city life whenever you need it. You'll find charging stations throughout the space for your devices while you take a break from the city bustle.
