About the Location
A Piece of Dallas History
Set in east Dallas since 1938, this sprawling 80.9-acre community space has been a local treasure for generations. The park bears the name of Dr. W.W. Samuell, a generous soul who gifted around 900 acres to the Dallas Park Department back in 1937.
You can find this green oasis near where Samuell Boulevard meets Grand Avenue - easy to reach from pretty much anywhere in Dallas. With its canopy of mature trees and landscaped grounds, it offers a peaceful escape from the surrounding city.
Get Moving
If you're the active type, you're in luck. The park offers a variety of athletic facilities including soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and baseball/softball fields.
Golf more your thing? Practice your drive at the on-site driving range. And if you've caught the pickleball bug (who hasn't these days?), you'll love the 12 well-maintained courts where you can book lessons, drills, or court time through the Impact Activities app.
The Samuell Grand Tennis Center has some historical significance, having hosted Arthur Ashe during the 1965 Davis Cup American Zone final. Today, its beautifully kept courts and pro shop (complete with stringing services) continue to serve tennis enthusiasts of all levels.
Take It Easy
Not feeling particularly athletic? No problem. The park offers plenty of shaded picnic areas scattered across the grounds - excellent for a family lunch or catching up with friends.
Kids will gravitate toward the playground adjacent to the recreation center, while the walking and biking trails that meander through the rolling landscape offer a peaceful way to enjoy some light exercise amid natural beauty. And yes, there's even a dog park where your four-legged friend can run free in a safe, enclosed space.
Make a Splash
The Cove at Samuell Grand is a highlight for many visitors, especially during Texas summers. This family-friendly aquatic center features a relaxing lazy river, challenging climbing wall, and exciting water slides - all for the reasonable price of $6 admission. If you plan to visit often, consider grabbing a Dallas Aquatic pass.
The facilities are clean, well-maintained, and staffed by friendly faces, making it a refreshing escape when the temperature climbs.
Indoor Options
The Samuell Grand Recreation Center provides excellent community facilities including a weight gym, basketball gymnasium, and spaces you can rent for events. The center is known for its clean facilities and professional staff, and occasionally serves as a voting location during elections - truly a hub for community life.
Culture Under the Stars
One of the park's special features is its amphitheater, home to Shakespeare Dallas during summer and fall. These professional productions have become something of a Dallas tradition, where you can bring a picnic dinner and wine while enjoying the Bard's works in an outdoor setting.
Interestingly, the amphitheater area tends to be cooler than the rest of the city - sometimes you might even need a sweater on summer evenings. With plenty of parking and a laid-back atmosphere, it's a unique cultural experience that brings people back year after year.
