About the Location
History and Dedication
Situated on El Paso's north side along McCombs St, Joey Barraza and Vino Memorial Park spans a generous 28 acres of all-inclusive recreational space. Locals sometimes still call it McCombs Park, though it was formally renamed from Northeast Regional Park to honor the memory of Border Patrol Agent Joey Barraza and his loyal K-9 partner Vino, who tragically lost their lives while serving in 2016.
Features and Activities
This spacious park offers a wide variety of recreational options. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the well-kept baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, and football fields where both casual games and organized tournaments regularly take place.
If you're into skateboarding, head to the back of the property where a popular skate park awaits riders of all skill levels. Need a more relaxed vibe? The park's wide green spaces are meant for impromptu games, family picnics, or just lounging with a good book.
Fitness fans can take advantage of the walking track that loops around the park - a great way to get those steps in! The paved walkways throughout make exploring easy for everyone, regardless of mobility needs.
Playgrounds
The little ones won't be bored here! Multiple playground areas cater to different age groups, with the newer playground featuring some pretty cool elements. Kids can make music on interactive instruments, zip through the air on a zip line with two different tracks, or test their climbing skills on a rock climbing wall.
For the tiny tots, there's a dedicated space with a sandpit and turf surfaces that's just their size. Most of the play equipment sits on rubber padding rather than wood chips - a thoughtful touch that improves both safety and accessibility.
One small downside: on those scorching El Paso days, the playgrounds could use a bit more shade coverage.
Dog Park
A relatively new addition (2022-2023), the dog park has quickly become a favorite spot for four-legged friends and their humans. Located at the south end of the property, it thoughtfully offers three separate sections for small, medium, and large dogs, so your pup can socialize with appropriately-sized playmates.
You'll discover water stations to keep pets hydrated and waste bags to help keep the area clean. The spacious enclosures give dogs plenty of room to sprint and play. Just note that after sunset, the lighting could be better - something to keep in mind for evening visits.
Recent Improvements
The park has seen quite a transformation in recent years. The 2023 upgrades significantly enhanced what was already a community park, integrating existing features like the skate park and artistic sculptures into new plazas, while adding fresh amenities like the dog park and additional playgrounds.
Even the parking situation - once a minor frustration - has been expanded to accommodate more visitors.
Facilities
When nature calls, restrooms are available, but during busy events you might find portable toilets supplementing the permanent facilities. Parking is generous, with plenty of spaces including accessible options for those with disabilities.
One thing that stands out is how well-maintained the grounds are - clean, green, and typically free of litter. Come evening, the well-lit pathways and sports areas make this a viable option for after-work recreation, with visibility that helps everyone feel secure.
Community Impact
Many northeast El Paso residents come here for outdoor recreation. The park's design accommodates diverse interests and age groups, providing locals with convenient access to recreational activities.
The park regularly hosts sports tournaments and provides space for family celebrations. Open daily from 6AM to 11PM, it offers a clean, welcoming space where El Pasoans can connect with nature and each other.
