About the Location

Natural Landscape

Found in the southeastern side of the Franklin Mountains in El Paso, McKelligon Canyon Park offers a breathtaking escape into nature without leaving the city behind. It's part of the larger Franklin Mountains State Park system, giving you an excellent taste of the Chihuahuan Desert's unique beauty.

As you drive in, you'll notice the canyon's dramatic steep rock walls towering alongside the paved road that winds through this rugged terrain. There's something almost meditative about being surrounded by these ancient formations that have stood the test of time.

Outdoor Recreation

If you're itching to get active, there are plenty of options here. Hiking trails range from gentle paths to more challenging routes, letting you choose your own adventure while soaking in amazing views of the mountains and El Paso sprawling below.

For the more adventurous souls, rock climbing is available in designated areas. The symmetrical terrain creates natural crevices and cracks that make for some interesting climbing routes - though you'll want to have some experience under your belt before tackling these walls.

Trail Access

McKelligon Canyon is one of the main gateways into the broader Franklin Mountains State Park. You can use it as your jumping-off point for exploring longer trails that weave throughout the mountain range.

If you're up for a challenge, the Ron Coleman Trail begins at the end of McKelligon Canyon. It's definitely one of the more difficult hikes in the area, but the views make every step worthwhile.

Amphitheatre

At the canyon's end, you'll discover the 1,503-seat McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. This outdoor venue hosts concerts, plays, and performances with an incredible natural backdrop that no man-made theater could ever replicate. There's something magical about experiencing live entertainment surrounded by towering canyon walls.

Location Benefits

One of the best things about McKelligon Canyon is how accessible it is. You can be in downtown El Paso one moment and surrounded by desert wilderness the next - making it fantastic for afternoon adventures or quick morning hikes. Its proximity to Fort Bliss has also made it a favorite spot for military families looking to experience the natural beauty of their temporary home.
