About the Location

A Vista That Takes Your Breath Away

Perched on the southern tip of the Franklin Mountains at a lofty 4,200 feet, Murchison Rogers Park might be small in size, but it delivers big on views. This overlook park offers sweeping panoramas of El Paso, Texas on one side and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico across the Rio Grande on the other. Many locals and visitors consider this spot one of El Paso's most beautiful viewpoints.

The magic really happens after sunset when both cities light up below you. The twinkling urban landscape creates a "sea of lights" against the darkness of the night sky - a striking contrast.

A Park with a Story

Opened in 1963, this scenic spot carries the name of El Paso pioneer and businessman Samuel Macintosh Murchison. What makes the park's history particularly interesting is how it came to be - through grassroots fundraising led by Samuel's wife Louise and members of the Women's Department of the Chamber of Commerce.

As you wander around, you'll notice informational plaques that point out historical locations visible from your vantage point, adding an educational layer to your visit.

Getting There

Reaching this heavenly viewpoint requires a bit of effort. You'll need to navigate Scenic Drive - a winding, steep, and narrow mountain road that leads to a small parking lot at the summit. Be aware that parking is limited and fills up quickly, especially around sunset when everyone gathers for nature's light show.

If you prefer to skip the drive, you can walk, run, or bike up during weekend road closures. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM.

What to Expect

The actual overlook sits about ten feet below the parking area, which has posed accessibility challenges in the past. Good news though - recent redevelopment plans aim to improve access by creating a sloped 'wedge' connecting the parking lot to the overlook while preserving the natural rock formations that make this place special.

Do watch your step when exploring the rocky areas as they can be slippery. For a closer look at both cities and the border area (including the border wall), try the coin-operated binoculars - just 25 cents for a magnified view of this international landscape.

The Experience

The real star of Murchison Rogers Park is undoubtedly its stunning views. If you're catching a golden sunset or watching the city lights flicker on as darkness falls, the perspective from up here is something special. It's a photographer's dream and a must-visit for anyone exploring El Paso.

Recent improvements have added comfort to the experience with new shaded areas, seating, and picnic spaces that make lingering more enjoyable. Your four-legged friends are welcome too, however note there are no restroom facilities available.

Come prepared for potentially strong winds at this elevation, and please help keep the park beautiful by taking any trash with you when you leave. For the full experience, try visiting twice - once in daylight to appreciate the vast landscape, and again after dark to witness the glittering tapestry of lights below.
