About the Location
Park Overview
Nestled in Northeast El Paso, Sue Young Park spreads across 17.7 acres of green space offering a peaceful retreat from city life. This park offers fresh air and outdoor activities in a convenient location.
The park serves local families and visitors with a variety of recreational options.
Water Features
A popular feature is the splash pad (or spray park) that opened in 2016. Running daily from 10 am to 8 pm between April 15th and October 30th, it's an excellent spot to cool down when Texas turns up the heat. Sometimes they even extend the season if the weather stays warm enough.
The splash pad is thoughtfully designed with zones that work for all ages, from toddlers to teens. Kids absolutely love the spray mushrooms and water balls, but nothing beats the excitement of the giant bucket that slowly fills before dumping water on squealing participants below.
Recreation Facilities
The park includes a playground area where children can climb, slide, and explore. There's a separate section just for swings, giving kids plenty of space to soar through the air safely.
For the sports crowd, soccer fields dot the landscape and regularly host local matches. Just be aware that the goals might be locked up when not being used for official games.
Beyond the formal play areas, the expansive grassy spaces invite impromptu frisbee games, kite flying when the breeze picks up, or simply running around with friends and family.
Trails and Scenery
Winding around the park, you'll discover walking paths shaded by mature trees - fantastic for morning jogs, casual strolls, or bike rides. Early birds often bring their four-legged friends for walks before the day heats up and the crowds arrive.
As you explore, take a moment to appreciate the lush greenery and the stunning backdrop of the Franklin Mountains rising majestically in the distance, especially beautiful during sunset hours.
Picnic Areas
When hunger strikes, head to one of the several picnic tables scattered around the grounds. Many sit under the shade of established trees, offering a cool spot to enjoy lunch or an evening snack.
Fair warning - finding a free table can be challenging during busy times, particularly near the splash pad where more seating would definitely be welcome given how popular this area gets.
Amenities and Accessibility
You'll discover plenty of parking available, but spaces fill quickly during peak hours and special events. Restroom facilities are on-site, with portable toilets added during the busier seasons.
The park is designed to be wheelchair accessible, and it's definitely dog-friendly with convenient waste bag stations throughout. During summer months, keep an ear out for the familiar jingle of ice cream trucks that frequently visit, adding a sweet touch to hot afternoons.
