About the Location
The Urban Oasis Taking Shape
Grand Park is developing into a major green space project in Frisco. Still in development, this future urban retreat will eventually span an impressive 1,011 acres of Texas landscape, stretching from the Dallas North Tollway all the way west to Lake Lewisville and FM 423. It's being designed to be accessible to everyone - locals and visitors alike, of all ages and abilities.
The Heart Behind the Park
In January 2024, the Frisco City Council approved a vision centered around four core experiences: play, explore, discover, and connect. Grand Park is intended to be a place where families can enjoy nature and spend quality time together.
One of the park's most fascinating features is actually underground. Grand Park protects patches of Blackland Prairie soil, an ecological treasure that's nearly vanished from Texas. With less than one percent of this soil type remaining statewide, walking here means treading on a rare piece of Texas heritage.
What's Coming Next
The park is taking shape in carefully planned phases. First up is the Community Hub, a 300-acre section that will eventually house five distinct districts: Civic Park, Adventure Play, Botanic Garden and Nature Area, Sports Park, and Nature Center.
Looking ahead, the Civic Park district will likely be the first area completed, with ground expected to break in late summer or early fall of 2025.
What You Can Experience Today
While most of Grand Park remains a work in progress, you can already get a taste of what's to come by exploring the Big Bluestem Trail. This natural, unpaved 2.2-mile path weaves through the undeveloped parkland and has been open since November 2022. It's a straight out-and-back trail (not a loop) featuring wide, flat sections that accommodate almost any fitness level. The trail isn't paved, but it's generally easy to navigate - though be prepared for mud after rainy days.
Nature's Show
Even in its early stages, the park offers some beautiful natural moments. Spring and summer transform the landscape into a canvas of wildflowers, painting your walk with natural color. There's also a small pond where, if you pause quietly, you might hear frogs or spot other wildlife going about their day.
For those interested in local history, keep an eye out for remnants of settlements dating back more than half a century. Just be careful of old barbed wire if you wander off the main path.
The Current Experience
The trail offers a peaceful escape where the soundtrack is simply birds and insects, and your walk feels surprisingly secluded despite being in Frisco. It's great for morning strolls, light hikes, and jogging - and yes, your four-legged friends are welcome too.
Just note that amenities are minimal at present - you won't find restrooms, playground equipment, or designated picnic areas yet. There is a small parking lot at the trailhead on Cotton Gin Road where you can pick up informational brochures about the local plants and wildlife before setting out to explore.
