About the Location
A Park with Heart
Spanning nearly 37 acres along Garland's landscape, Rick Oden Park carries a touching history that gives it special meaning. The park was named after Richard "Rick" Oden, a young Little League player who tragically lost his life in 1956 when he was struck by a baseball during a game - marking the first on-field death in U.S. Little League history. Shortly after this heartbreaking incident, the park was dedicated to his memory.
Something for Everyone
If you're a tennis enthusiast, you'll love the Jack Coleman Tennis Center, which draws players from all corners of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. With multiple well-maintained courts, it's perfect whether you're just hitting balls with friends or working on your competitive game.
True to its roots, the park features baseball fields that honor its connection to the sport. You'll also find peaceful picnic spots, athletic fields, and a playground that makes this a great spot for family outings. The park's open spaces offer a welcome retreat from the hustle of daily life - a place where you can simply breathe and relax.
Skater's Paradise
The Jon Comer Skatepark, opened in October 2022, is truly something to behold. As the second largest skatepark in Texas (an impressive 48,500 square feet!), it offers plenty of room for skaters of all levels to practice their tricks and techniques. The space is generally kept clean and well-maintained, making it a favorite destination in the local skating community.
Note that while the skatepark is a dream for skateboarding enthusiasts, bikes aren't allowed in this area - so plan accordingly if you're bringing wheels of the two-wheeled variety.
Fresh Face, Same Heart
The park has recently been given some TLC as part of Garland's 2019 Bond Program. These upgrades include a new regional playground, a pedestrian bridge, and welcome additions like shade structures, benches, and drinking fountains. The restrooms have been improved, trails enhanced, and sports fields renovated. All these thoughtful improvements have breathed new life into this cherished space, making it more inviting than ever.
Plan Your Visit
Rick Oden Park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11:59PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer. There's ample parking available, and the spacious grounds provide room for all sorts of activities.
