About the Location
The Story Behind the Green Space
Nestled in Houston, Bane Park spans 18.2 acres along W Little York Rd. This community park owes its existence to William "Bill" Bane Sr., a devoted Fairbanks community member who donated the land to Harris County with the vision of creating both a park and library for locals to enjoy.
Get Moving and Playing
If you're looking to burn some energy, Bane Park offers several options. The park has two lighted ball fields where Little League teams play and Cyfair Sports hosts regular activities.
One of the park's most inclusive features is its five-acre wheelchair-accessible fishing lake, ensuring everyone can try their luck at catching something. The lake operates on a catch and release basis, and while fishing success varies, you might reel in bluegill, bass, or catfish if the fish are feeling friendly that day.
Need to stretch your legs? A paved walking trail circles the pond for about 0.3 miles - ideal for a casual stroll or a quick cardio session. Beach volleyball enthusiasts can spike and serve at the park's sand volleyball court.
For the little ones, there are thoughtfully designed playground areas with separate sections for different age groups. Many play areas offer welcome shade to keep the equipment from turning into mini-ovens on hot Texas days. When temperatures climb, the splash pad provides a refreshing escape, however occasionally it might be taking a maintenance day.
Nature's Corner
In the midst of Houston's urban landscape, Bane Park offers a surprising wildlife haven. The pond attracts ducks and turtles in abundance, with springtime sometimes bringing adorable ducklings into the mix.
Keep your eyes peeled for nutria rats too - these water-loving rodents are often mistaken for beavers by casual observers. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, explore the short wooded trails where bat houses have been installed to support these helpful flying mammals.
Comfort and Convenience
Planning a picnic? You'll find plenty of options here. The park features picnic pavilions and numerous tables distributed across the grounds, some offering shade for those sunny Houston days. Fancy some outdoor cooking? Barbecue grills are available for your grilling pleasure.
Clean restrooms are maintained near the park entrance, but be aware they might be a bit of a trek depending on where you settle in for the day.
The park offers plenty of parking spots and sits right next to a public library, making it easy to combine outdoor recreation with some indoor reading. Dog owners, your four-legged friends are welcome, but keep them leashed to respect the local wildlife that calls this park home.
