About Gus S. and Lyndall F. Wortham Park
A Peaceful Escape in the Medical District
Tucked between bustling hospital buildings at South Main Street and Holcombe Boulevard sits Gus S. and Lyndall F. Wortham Park, a modest 1.2-acre green haven in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Since its dedication in September 1991, this thoughtfully designed space (courtesy of John Burgee Architects from New York City) has offered a much-needed touch of nature amid the clinical surroundings.

The Fountain That Was
Back in its heyday, the park centered around an impressive 650-foot water pool featuring 23 water columns that gradually increased in height. This fountain wasn't just decorative - it was designed to create a calming auditory backdrop to help offset the constant hum of the medical district.
These days, though, the water features have gone dry. The tall pillars remain as silent sentinels to the park's original design, standing as architectural elements rather than the flowing fountains they once were.
The park came to life thanks to a generous $2.5 million grant from the Wortham Foundation, with additional support from three other donor groups.
A Breathing Space
You'll often find medical staff in scrubs taking a quick lunch break here, patients getting some fresh air, and visitors stepping away from the emotional intensity of hospital corridors. Its location at a busy intersection makes it an easy-to-find landmark within the sprawling medical complex.

What You'll Find Today
Even without the soothing sounds of running water, the park offers comfortable benches and winding walking paths that welcome both two-legged and four-legged visitors. The shady spots and open grassy areas provide a refreshing contrast to the sterile hospital environments nearby.

Planning Your Visit
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM. Note that there's no dedicated parking for the park itself - you'll need to use one of the paid parking options available throughout the Texas Medical Center area.
