About Smither Park in Houston
Smither Park is a unique urban green space located in Houston's East End neighborhood. Situated adjacent to the Orange Show Monument, this half-acre park showcases an extensive collection of intricate mosaic artwork created by local artists.
The park was conceived as a tribute to John H. Smither, a Houston lawyer and supporter of visionary art. Designed by Dan Phillips in collaboration with Stephanie Smither, the park embodies the spirit of folk art and sustainability. Its various features are adorned with mosaics made from recycled and found materials, including broken ceramics, tiles, bottles, and other repurposed items.
Central to Smither Park is the 400-foot Memory Wall, which comprises numerous panels created by different artists. Each panel tells a unique story through its mosaic design. The park also features the Lindley Fish Amphitheater, a performance space decorated with vibrant mosaics that hosts various events and gatherings.
Other notable elements of the park include the Vinson & Elkins Pavilion, a covered area suitable for picnics and social gatherings, and the Marilyn Oshman Meditation Garden, which offers a tranquil space for reflection. Visitors can also enjoy the Burguieres, Hinton and Mathre Swings, which combine functionality with artistic design.
Smither Park is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. On Saturdays, visitors may have the opportunity to observe artists at work, adding to the ongoing mosaic installations. The park serves as both a recreational space and an evolving work of public art, reflecting Houston's commitment to creative expression and community engagement.
