This small space offers several options for recreation. You'll come across a full-court basketball court where locals often gather for pickup games, plus a versatile tennis court that's also lined for pickleball - well-suited for when you can't decide which racquet sport you're in the mood for. There's even a practice wall on the tennis court for those days when your playing partner bails but you still want to work on your backhand.

Kids have their own space to burn off energy at the playground, which features equipment for various ages and abilities. The swing set is typically a favorite, however fair warning: during Houston's scorching summer months, the equipment can get pretty toasty since there's no shade covering it.

Community Space

Set in the Sunset Heights neighborhood, Halbert Park might be small, but it acts as a beloved green retreat for nearby residents. Families and after-school groups especially seem to claim this space as their own in the afternoons.

When hunger strikes, head to the picnic area where you can find several tables tucked under the shade of lovely trees - a fantastic escape from the Texas sun. The mature trees across the park create a peaceful backdrop that makes you temporarily forget you're in the heart of Houston.

In an interesting twist, the park houses a designated free speech area. This unique feature provides a space for community gatherings and expressions of First Amendment rights during regular park hours.

Your four-legged friends are welcome here, as Halbert Park is dog-friendly - just remember to keep them leashed. Many neighborhood dog owners make this a regular stop on their walking routes, especially those with pups that enjoy being around children.

Note that there are no restroom facilities available, so plan accordingly. If you're looking for a quieter visit, you might want to avoid the 2-4 PM window on school days, when the park sees an influx of students from the nearby school.

Despite its small size, Halbert Park offers various amenities. It's a well-maintained neighborhood space that makes good use of its limited area.
