About Evella Park
Fresh New Look
Evella Park got a serious glow-up recently as part of Mayor Sylvester Turner's Love Our Parks initiative. By December 2023, the City of Houston had poured $785,610 into transforming this 5th Ward neighborhood spot into something the community could truly enjoy.
The makeover added new features to the space where locals can connect, play, and enjoy their neighborhood.
Places to Play
One of the standout additions is the new basketball court, which might take regulars a minute to adjust to, but definitely levels up the sporting options here. If you're looking to shoot some hoops in the 5th Ward, this court is a good option.
For the little ones, there's now a modern playground that's become quite the hit. With swings to soar on, monkey bars to conquer, slides to zoom down, and plenty of other equipment, it's designed to get kids moving and playing in the fresh air - something we could all use more of these days.

What It Means for the Neighborhood
The revival of Evella Park is part of Houston's efforts to improve public spaces across neighborhoods. It's now a place where the community comes together, whether for a casual afternoon or a special event.
Local families have certainly taken to the space. Some parents have mentioned how they wish they'd had these amenities growing up in the area, and now their children get to enjoy what wasn't available before.
What to Know
While the park offers great recreational options, you might want to note that seating is somewhat limited, especially around the playground. If you're planning to stay a while, consider bringing a portable chair or blanket. A few more trash cans wouldn't hurt either.
The park has also become a natural gathering spot for community celebrations, including the Love Our Parks Initiative event that brought out food vendors, city officials, and neighbors alike - proving that sometimes, a park is not simply a park.
