About the Location
Green Oasis in the City
James Bute Park is a 12.5-acre green space located near Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas. The park lies in the shadow of downtown Houston's skyscrapers, offering a pocket of nature in an otherwise urban environment.
Historical Significance
Originally known as the McKee Street Bridge Habitat, the park was renamed after James "Jim" Bute IV, owner of the Bute Paint Company and an original contributor to the McKee Street Bridge project. It also honors his grandfather, James Bute I, who founded Bute Paint and significantly contributed to Houston's development.
The park encompasses the historic Frost Town Site, an area of archaeological importance that was once Houston's first working-class community. This connection to the city's past adds historical significance to the park's natural offerings.
