Firemen's Park
About Firemen's Park
Recreational Opportunities
Located in McAllen is Firemen's Park, a little urban oasis centered around a 3-acre lake that's great for anyone needing a breath of fresh air. The lake is home to some rather sociable ducks that often waddle up to greet visitors (especially if they think you might have snacks).
Wrapping around the water is a half-mile paved trail that's smooth enough for an easy jog, a leisurely stroll, or a casual bike ride. If you're feeling ambitious, this path connects to the city's 2nd Street Hike and Bike trail, so you can extend your adventure through more of McAllen. An evening walk can be quite pleasant when the moon reflects across the water's surface.
Water Activities
If you want to get out on the water, the park offers boat and kayak rentals. You can choose between quirky paddle boats shaped like ducks (because why not?) or traditional kayaks from the rental hut that typically operates from noon until dusk. It costs about $25 for a half-hour on the water.
If fishing is more your style, you're welcome to cast a line into the lake, but it's strictly catch-and-release. Left your gear at home? No problem - fishing rods are available for rent right at the park. Just remember that cast nets aren't allowed. Bass, catfish, blue gill, and tilapia are common catches for patient anglers.
Amenities for Families
Kids need to burn off some energy? The park's playground offers a safe space for little ones to climb, slide, and play. It's best suited for children over 5 years old and features two slides.
When hunger strikes, several picnic areas with tables and grills make it easy to enjoy an outdoor meal. Some spots offer shaded coverings - a real blessing during those hot Texas days - making them ideal for family gatherings or casual meet-ups with friends.
Facilities and Sports
Planning a bigger event? The park's large pavilion can hold up to 250 people and comes equipped with amenities like a refrigerator, indoor grill, and restrooms. Speaking of which, clean restrooms are conveniently located around the park - always a plus for longer visits.
Active types will appreciate the sand volleyball court, well-suited for impromptu games. There's also plenty of open space around the park for tossing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball, or simply sprawling out on a blanket with a good book.
Additional Features
Dog owners, rejoice - Firemen's Park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can enjoy the scenery alongside you. The park welcomes visitors daily from 8AM to 11PM, accommodating both early birds and night owls. And if you work up an appetite during your visit, the nearby University Draft House offers food and drinks just steps from the park.
