About the Location
Splash into Fun
Mesquite's first spray pad, the Spray Zone, opened at Clay Mathis Park in May 2025 and offers a welcome relief from the Texas heat. Unlike typical splash pads that recirculate water, this one uses a single-pass system that keeps things fresh and clean.
The Spray Zone comes equipped with water-saving features and automatic timers, which is thoughtful in our drought-prone region. It's open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, May through September. What's particularly convenient is how it sits right next to the playground, making it easy to bounce between activities during those sweltering summer days.
Play Paradise
The recently updated playground is a hit with kids of all ages. Safety first: the play area features a cushioned rubber surface that's much more forgiving than the concrete and woodchips many of us grew up with. The standout attraction has to be the rope climbing structure that's sturdy enough even for adults to join in (no judgment here).
Whether you've got toddlers just finding their feet or middle schoolers with energy to burn, the playground design thoughtfully accommodates everyone. And with the Spray Zone just steps away, you can easily keep an eye on kids who want to alternate between climbing and splashing.
Practical Amenities
The park's restrooms are clean and stay open until 7 PM - a detail that shouldn't be exciting but absolutely is when you're out with kids. They're spacious enough to serve as changing rooms after water play, which is a huge plus.
Scattered around the park are several covered picnic areas with metal tables positioned in the shade - ideal for a lunch break or afternoon snack. If you're planning something bigger, the pavilion can be reserved and comes with three tables. Its central location makes it ideal for birthday parties where kids will inevitably scatter to explore all the park has to offer.
Get Active
Sports enthusiasts have plenty of options here. The park includes facilities for baseball, softball, basketball, and even sand volleyball for those beach-sport vibes without the beach.
If you're in the mood for something less competitive, take advantage of the picnic areas or stretch your legs on the walking trails. Its location near Horn High School makes it easily accessible for both residents and students looking for some after-school recreation.
The Vibe
Despite its many attractions, Clay Mathis Park maintains a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere. It can get busy in the late afternoons - especially during summer - but it still somehow feels like a hidden treasure within Mesquite.
The recent renovations have improved this space considerably. Locals seem to appreciate the maintenance and upgrades to this neighborhood park.
