About the Location
A Green Haven in Midland
Set in Midland, Texas, Washington Park spans 16 acres of green space for locals looking to escape the daily grind. Whether you're seeking an active afternoon or just a peaceful spot to unwind during lunch, this park has a little something for everyone.
Splash Central: The Washington Aquatic Center
Let's be honest - Texas summers can be brutal. The Washington Aquatic Center is the park's highlight for beating the heat. With three water slides that kids (and let's face it, adults too) enjoy, a lazy river for floating, and two whirlpools for warm-water relaxation, it offers a variety of water activities.
Families with little ones will find a children's area featuring a fish slide and a playground with a water-pouring bucket that toddlers seem to love. There's also a super-shallow section where infants can safely splash around, making it accessible for family members of all ages.
The Aquatic Center typically runs in two daily sessions (12pm-3pm and 4pm-7pm) during summer months. At about $5 per person (kiddos under 2 get in free), it's an affordable escape from the Texas heat. A nice touch: life jackets are available to borrow at no extra cost.
Get Your Game On
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed with the park's athletic offerings. The lighted baseball field means you can keep playing even as the day winds down, while the basketball courts are well-suited for pickup games or practicing your jump shot.
Staying fit is easier with the park's exercise equipment strategically placed across the grounds. And if team sports are more your style, there's space for volleyball, softball, and kickball games on the open fields.
Family-Friendly Features
The park's playground area gives younger visitors a place to climb, slide, and burn off energy, however you might notice some equipment could use a little TLC.
Planning a family gathering? You can find plenty of grills for cooking up your favorite barbecue and numerous picnic tables scattered under shade trees - a must-have feature during those sunny Texas afternoons.
The Lay of the Land
Washington Park strikes a nice balance between open sunny spaces and cool shaded areas. The pavilion provides welcome shelter on particularly hot or rainy days, and the grounds are spacious enough to host everything from birthday parties to larger community celebrations.
Benches across the park offer spots to rest, people-watch, or just enjoy a moment of quiet. And let's not overlook the practical stuff - the recently added restroom facilities make longer visits much more comfortable.
Heart of the Community
Washington Park has been part of Midland's community life for years, particularly in southeastern Midland, hosting various gatherings including Juneteenth celebrations.
The park's building known as "The White House" functions as a venue for local events and gatherings. Recent park improvements have updated this community space for Midland residents.
