About the Location
Natural Springs and Water Features
Situated in the heart of New Braunfels, Texas, Landa Park spans a refreshing 51 acres of natural beauty. At its core are the Comal Springs - the largest springs you'll come across in Texas and across the American Southwest.
These bubbling artesian springs feed into the serene Landa Lake and give birth to the Comal River, creating a little piece of paradise that feels worlds away from the Texas heat. There's something magical about watching the crystal-clear waters flow through the park - it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think.
Rich History
This wasn't always a public hangout spot. Back in the mid-1800s, Harry and Joseph Landa owned this land as a private retreat for family and friends. By the late 1890s, word got out about this gorgeous location, and it earned the nickname the "Beauty Spot of Texas" - a title that's hard to argue with even today.
In 1936, the City of New Braunfels purchased the property, opening this natural setting to everyone. It's been a popular community space ever since.
Natural Diversity
If you're into trees, you're in for a treat. The park houses over 50 different species, with many grand old specimens that have been standing tall for more than a century. The William and Dolores Schumann Arboretum within the park is like a living museum of Texas trees.
Take the 1.25-mile self-guided tour through the arboretum to get acquainted with these gentle giants. And don't be surprised if you have some company along the way - deer, ducks, squirrels, birds, and fish all call this park home too.
Recreation Opportunities
There's plenty to do at Landa Park. Hop aboard the charming miniature train that winds through the grounds - it's a hit with kids and kids-at-heart alike.
When Texas turns up the heat, the historic spring-fed swimming pool (a pre-1936 feature!) offers an excellent cool-down spot. You can also rent paddle boats to explore Landa Lake at your own pace.
If you prefer to stay on dry land, check out the hiking trails, including the Panther Canyon Nature Trail. Fishing spots are available in designated areas, and several playgrounds are scattered across the park, including accessible equipment so all children can join in the fun.
Family-Friendly Amenities
Landa Park makes it easy to spend a full day outdoors. Multiple playgrounds cater to kids of different ages, from toddlers to the older crowd. There's also a miniature golf course that provides just the right amount of friendly competition for groups.
Hungry? You'll find plenty of picnic areas with tables across the park, many shaded by towering trees. For bigger gatherings, some pavilions and picnic areas can be reserved ahead of time. And yes, there are clean restrooms around the grounds - sometimes it's the simple things that matter most.
Community Landmark
The photogenic Philippine-style gazebo (another pre-1936 treasure) offers an ideal backdrop for family photos or a peaceful spot to sit and watch the world go by. Year-round, the park hosts various community events that bring locals together.
Landa Park is both a green space and part of New Braunfels' identity. Local organizations like the Friends for the Preservation of Historic Landa Park and the New Braunfels Parks Foundation contribute to the park's preservation.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to midnight, so whether you're an early bird looking for a peaceful morning walk or someone who enjoys an evening stroll under the stars, Landa Park is ready when you are.
