About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away at 2100 Independence Drive in New Braunfels, Mission Hill Park spans a generous 10 acres of Texas terrain. This newcomer to the city's green spaces began taking shape in 2022, giving residents west of Loop 337 their first public recreational area to call their own. Beyond just being a pretty spot to visit, the park carries whispers of history, having played its part in New Braunfels' story since the 1800s.
Development Phases
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is Mission Hill Park. Phase 1 wrapped up in 2022, giving visitors the basics - a place to park and improved trailheads to get you started on your outdoor adventure.
Phase 2 began in February 2025. It's a $12 million project that locals backed when they voted for Proposition B in 2023.
Trails and Accessibility
Currently, the park offers a modest loop trail that you can complete in about 15 minutes. The paved path guides you from the parking area up to the hilltop, where nature unfolds around you.
You'll come across the trail well-maintained with cleared trailheads and paved sections atop the hill. It's generally easy to follow, but heads up - some sections near the end of the loop might have you second-guessing your direction.
Educational Elements
Dotted around the park, informative signs bring Mission Hill's story to life. These markers share fascinating historical tidbits about the area and outline what's coming next in the park's development. They're like little windows into the past, connecting today's park with its historical roots.
Features and Attractions
Phase 2 is bringing some impressive additions to the park. The centerpiece will be a three-story, 7,600-square-foot observation tower with meeting space and restrooms on the ground floor. An elevated walkway will connect to the tower's second floor, offering extensive views of the surrounding area.
The plans also include an ADA-accessible path from Independence Drive all the way to the hilltop, along with several natural surface trails winding through the property.
Natural Environment
Mission Hill Park combines preservation of native plants and wildlife with spaces for people to learn and explore. From various points in the park, you can take in breathtaking views of the Texas Hill Country stretching out before you.
Right now, parts of the hilltop are still embracing their wild side with overgrown grass and trees, but several cleared viewpoints offer perfect spots to pause and soak in the landscape.
Phase 2 is expected to be completed around February 2026.
