Park History

Nestled along Bandera Road in San Antonio, Texas, O.P. Schnabel Park spans a generous 202 acres of natural beauty. The city purchased this land in 1964, initially dubbing it Bandera Road Park before giving it a more meaningful name in 1977.

The park's namesake, Otto Phillip Schnabel, was an insurance salesman with an unusual passion: keeping San Antonio spotless and beautiful. His dedication to cleanliness lives on in the park's nickname - "the cleanest little park in Texas." (How many parks are named after insurance agents with a cleaning obsession?)

Natural Features

What makes this park special is how it straddles two distinct ecosystems. The western side features classic oak forests, while the eastern portion showcases the rockier, more rugged Hill Country-style Ashe juniper landscape. It's like experiencing two different natural settings in one park.

If you visit in early spring, you're in for a sensory treat. The east side bursts with mountain laurels blooming in vibrant purple and - here's the best part - filling the air with a scent remarkably similar to grape jelly. On the same side, you'll come across a limestone bluff that offers some pretty impressive views, including distant sightings of the Medical Center on clear days.

One of the park's most charming features is its population of deer that have grown quite comfortable around humans. Don't be surprised if you round a corner on a trail and find yourself face-to-face with these gentle creatures who might regard you with more curiosity than fear. It's a bit like walking through a natural petting zoo (though please don't actually pet them).

Trails and Recreation

The park offers over 8 miles of trails that wind throughout the property. The mix of paved and dirt paths accommodates everyone from casual strollers to serious mountain bikers. The paved sections are wheelchair and stroller friendly, while still giving you that immersed-in-nature feeling.

The park acts as a gateway to the larger Leon Creek Greenway, connecting you to San Antonio's broader trail network if you're feeling particularly adventurous.

Even in the Texas heat, many trails remain comfortable thanks to abundant shade. Mountain biking enthusiasts can enjoy the singletrack options with their varying challenges. Just note that after a good rain, some dirt trails can get a bit muddy.

Sports enthusiasts will find both baseball fields and soccer fields that host youth sports during the year.
