About the Location
Fresh Beginnings
Maverick Park got a serious glow-up in April 2021, thanks to the 2017 Bond Program and some generous community donations. It's pretty cool to see San Antonio investing in spaces where everyone can hang out and enjoy some fresh air.
The park isn't done evolving either. Between Fall 2025 and Summer 2026, the 2022-2027 Bond Project will bring even more improvements: better lighting (always appreciated after sunset), a new pavilion, fun playground equipment, freshly renovated sidewalks, and they're even moving those electrical services underground. Smart move.
Puppy Paradise
Let's talk about what might be the best part of this park - the one-acre dog park that came with the 2021 renovation. If you've got a four-legged friend, this place is a must-visit. They've thoughtfully divided it into two sections so your tiny Chihuahua won't have to dodge that enthusiastic Great Dane.
Your pup can get their exercise fix with the tunnels, jumps, and hoops scattered throughout. The large dog area has that natural mulch, dirt, and leaf covering that dogs seem to love getting dirty in, while the small dog area keeps it grassy - great for those little paws.
They've thought of everything here: two poop bag stations (because responsible pet ownership matters), plenty of trash cans, and comfortable seating so you can chill while Fido makes new friends. There's even a specially designed water fountain for dogs, so your best buddy can stay hydrated during playtime.
Human Comforts
Don't worry - there's plenty for humans too. The pavilion comes equipped with picnic tables, making it an ideal spot for lunch or a casual get-together. Feeling like some outdoor cooking? There are also BBQ facilities available.
When nature calls, you won't have to leave the park thanks to the Portland Loo restroom. It's accessible for everyone, though like most public restrooms, cleanliness can be hit or miss depending on when you visit.
The recent landscaping upgrades and tree planting have definitely made the park prettier, and those trees will eventually provide more shade. For now, though, parts of the park can get pretty sun-soaked - so don't forget your sunscreen in the summer months.
Finding Your Way
One of the best things about Maverick Park is its downtown location. You'll find plenty of parking nearby, especially if you arrive after 5:00 PM when the office crowd heads home.
If you're exploring downtown San Antonio, the park sits just a few blocks from the iconic San Antonio Riverwalk, making it an ideal stop to catch your breath during a day of sightseeing. The dog park area has good lighting for evening visits, but the rest of the park could use a few more lamps for those after-dark strolls - something hopefully addressed in those upcoming improvements.
