About the Location
A Hidden Memorial Garden
Situated in downtown San Antonio, Chris Park is a small, peaceful haven that might just make you forget you're in the middle of a bustling city. Created in 2005 by Linda Pace, this one-acre sanctuary is a heartfelt memorial to her son Christopher Goldsbury, who passed away in 1997.
This intimate park combines elements of nature, art, and quiet reflection - a living tribute in the heart of urban Texas.
Nature's Tapestry
The park's landscape features an intentional mix of native and exotic plants that create distinct little pockets throughout the space. Towering Giant Timber Bamboo sways gently in the breeze, while Texas sabal palms provide patches of natural shade. The Hong Kong Orchid trees and Natchez Mock Orange shrubs add splashes of color and fragrance at different times of the year.
The vegetation is arranged to create natural rooms within the park where you can pause and relax.
Finding Your Way
Stone-paved walkways meander through the greenery, guiding you on a gentle journey through the different sections of the park. The paths are thoughtfully placed, encouraging exploration without feeling forced or overly designed.
Kids (and let's be honest, plenty of adults too) gravitate toward Tumble Hill, a simple raised mound of soft St. Augustine grass in the northeast corner. There's something timeless about watching children roll down this small slope, their laughter cutting through the otherwise tranquil atmosphere.
White tables scattered throughout provide perfect spots to enjoy a simple picnic or just sit for a moment with your thoughts - or perhaps a good book.
Art in the Everyday
What makes Chris Park truly special is how art is woven throughout the landscape. Artist Teresita Fernández created subtle installations that you might miss if you're rushing through. The most magical might be the Starfield - fifty-five tiny blue LED lights embedded in the stone terrace that illuminate at night, recreating the exact constellation pattern from the day of Chris's birth.
Look down as you walk and you might spot seven jewel-toned glass pavers telling a nursery rhyme that had personal significance to Chris. The pathways hide other small treasures too - embedded diamonds and words written in stone that reward the observant visitor.
Moments of Pause
Quarried limestone benches appear throughout the garden, each inscribed with brief passages from Chris's journals. These provide natural spots to sit and reflect, connecting you to the memorial aspect of the park while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Part of Something Bigger
Chris Park isn't standing alone - it's actually part of the Linda Pace Foundation's contemporary art campus, which includes Ruby City and Studio. The Studio was Linda's actual working space and now showcases thought-provoking contemporary art.
If you have time after exploring the park, Ruby City sits right next door - an impressive gallery housing contemporary art installations that complement the outdoor experience beautifully.
Good to Know
Despite its small size, this tiny urban garden offers a meaningful experience. It's ideal for those moments when you need to step away from the noise, snap a few photos, or just sit quietly for a while.
There are restrooms available, which is always a practical plus for a park visit. And unlike some urban green spaces, Chris Park is meticulously maintained, so you'll come across it clean and welcoming no matter when you drop by.
