About the Location

Historic Origins

Washington Square Park is a historic public space located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The park occupies a full city block, bounded by 400 South (University Boulevard) to the north, 200 East to the east, 500 South (Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard) to the south, and State Street to the west.

At its center stands the imposing Salt Lake City and County Building, a Richardsonian Romanesque structure completed in 1894 that serves as the focal point of the square.

Rich History

The park's history dates back to the initial 1847 survey of Salt Lake City when it was designated as a public square. In its early days, it served various purposes, including a campground for newly arrived Mormon pioneers and a staging area for wagon trains headed to other parts of the Western United States.

Over time, the square hosted a skating pond, circuses, markets, and sports fields before the construction of the City and County Building.

Modern Day Use

Today, Washington Square Park continues to play a significant role in Salt Lake City's civic and cultural life. The park's grounds feature trees, walkways, and statues surrounding the central building, creating a green oasis in the urban landscape.

It serves as a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike, offering a space for relaxation, picnics, and community events.

Cultural Events

The park hosts several of Salt Lake City's major cultural celebrations and events throughout the year. Some of the notable festivities held here include the Living Traditions Festival, Utah Arts Festival, Utah Pride Festival, and Days of '47 Pioneer Celebration.

During these events, the adjacent 200 East Street is often closed to create an expanded event plaza.

Olympic Connection

Washington Square Park also holds historical significance beyond its local context. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, the park played a role in the celebrations, with a special Olympic cauldron set up and lit as part of the festivities.

More recently, in July 2024, the park served as a gathering place for thousands of people to watch the announcement of Salt Lake City's successful bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.
