Bells Mill Park is a public park located in Chesapeake, Virginia. The park has an interesting history, as it was formerly a landfill that has been transformed into a recreational space for the community.

Natural Beauty and Wildlife

The park features footpaths that wind through wetlands and meadows, offering visitors elevated scenic views of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. This natural setting attracts various migratory and native bird species, making it an excellent location for birdwatching.

The dense reeds provide cover and safe nesting areas for many bird species, while wild mulberries, cherries, and blackberries offer food for the visiting birds.

Park Features and Ecology

Bells Mill Park spans a considerable area, with nearly 40 acres in its eastern section. To reduce maintenance requirements and enhance the park's ecological value, a wildflower meadow has been created, which helps increase the number of pollinators at the site and decrease the amount of fossil fuels needed for upkeep.

The park's layout includes a 2.5-mile circular running trail, allowing visitors to enjoy extended walks or runs through the natural landscape.

Usage Guidelines

Due to its history as a landfill, the park has an environmental cap, which means that bikes and motorized vehicles are not permitted on the grounds.
