Historic Significance
Chimborazo Park is a historic 30-acre public park located on a hill in Richmond's East End. The site has a rich history dating back to the American Civil War, when it served as the location of Chimborazo Hospital, one of the largest Confederate hospitals.
After the war, in 1874, the City of Richmond acquired the land and established it as a public park.
Scenic Views
Situated on an elevated position, the park offers visitors panoramic views of the James River and downtown Richmond skyline. These vistas make it a popular spot for photography and peaceful contemplation.
Park Features
Today, Chimborazo Park features open green spaces, walking paths, and recreational facilities. One of the park's notable features is a miniature Statue of Liberty, erected in the 1950s by the Boy Scouts.
The park also includes a playground and a popular off-leash dog area known as the Church Hill Dog Park.
Museum and Community Space
The park is home to the Chimborazo Medical Museum, operated by the National Park Service, which provides exhibits on Civil War-era medicine and the history of the former hospital.
Chimborazo Park serves as a community gathering space, hosting various events throughout the year and providing residents with a peaceful urban retreat.
