About the Location

A Window to Richmond's Past

Perched on a hill in Richmond's East End, the 30-acre Chimborazo Park isn't just a green space - it's a piece of American history. This land once housed the Chimborazo Hospital, one of the largest Confederate medical facilities during the Civil War. When Richmond acquired the property in 1874, they created what would become the city's oldest public park, a space that's been witnessing Richmond's evolution for nearly 150 years.

Skyline Views That Take Your Breath Away

If you're looking for a great Richmond panorama, this is an excellent spot. Sitting elevated above the city, Chimborazo offers stunning vistas of the James River and downtown Richmond's skyline. We've found that the stone wall along the hillside makes for an excellent perch to watch the sun sink behind the city. From up here, you can take in everything from Fulton Bottom to Southside, with I-95 and Route 5 winding through the landscape below.

Beyond Pretty Views

The park stretches out with generous green spaces ideal for afternoon lounging or morning jogs. Quirky fact: there's a miniature Statue of Liberty standing proudly since the 1950s, courtesy of the Boy Scouts - it's become something of a local treasure over the decades.

Bring the kids to burn off energy at the playground, or let your four-legged friend run free in the Church Hill Dog Park, a popular off-leash area where the city's pups socialize. The hillside has several benches great for sitting with a good book or enjoying a picnic lunch.

Step Back in Time

History buffs shouldn't miss the Chimborazo Medical Museum operated by the National Park Service. Here, exhibits bring Civil War medicine and hospital operations to life. Take 17 minutes to watch the informative video about the site's fascinating past, and don't hesitate to chat with the rangers - they're full of interesting details about this historic ground.

And yes, there are clean restrooms and a water bottle filling station - those practical comforts that make a longer visit possible.

Room to Play

On any given day, you'll find the park alive with activity. The sprawling grassy areas host everything from impromptu frisbee games to kite flyers dancing with the wind. Kids wobble by on bikes and scooters, while adults carve out quiet moments for yoga or meditation.

Throughout the year, concerts and performances are occasionally held here, bringing the neighborhood together outdoors.

Monuments With Meaning

Beyond that charming mini Lady Liberty, Chimborazo houses thoughtful monuments related to emancipation and indigenous peoples' history. These markers offer quiet moments of reflection and learning about Richmond's complex past.

With its historical significance, natural beauty, and community activities, Chimborazo Park offers a meaningful urban retreat in Richmond.
