About the Location

A Natural Oasis with Three Lakes

Three Lakes Park is a suburban park located in Henrico County, Virginia, near Richmond. The park is aptly named for its three central lakes, which were originally borrow pits created during the construction of Interstate 64.

These lakes now serve as the main attraction of the park, with two of them open for fishing.

Nature Center and Exhibits

The park features a 6,500 square foot nature center that serves as an educational hub for visitors. Inside, guests can explore interactive exhibits and displays that teach about the native plants and animals of the area.

A highlight of the nature center is its 50,000-gallon in-ground aquarium, which showcases aquatic life found in the park's lakes.

Trail System and Wildlife

Three Lakes Park offers an extensive trail system that meanders through various habitats, including swamps, upland forests, open fields, meadows, and riparian woodlands. These diverse ecosystems provide excellent opportunities for wildlife watching.

Visitors can observe a wide variety of birds, including woodpeckers, chickadees, warblers, and owls, as well as other wildlife such as turtles and dragonflies.

The park is also home to a successful prothonotary warbler nest box program, offering a chance to spot these vibrant yellow birds that are habitat specialists requiring forest swamps with stagnant or slow-moving water.

Ongoing Renovations

As of 2025, the park is undergoing renovations to improve and modernize its facilities. These improvements include a new entrance walkway with seating and lighting, an outdoor classroom, and upgrades to the trail network.

The nature center is temporarily closed for these renovations, which will bring new features to the front entrance, upgrades to the outdoor aquarium, and new living exhibits inside.
