About Kempes Landing Park
A Step Back in Time
Tucked away at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Kempsville/Witchduck Road, Kempes Landing Park is a charming window into the Kempsville area's storied past. Opened in 2015, this green space marks the inaugural phase of the Historic Kempsville Development Plan.
Spanning roughly three acres, the park emerged as part of the broader Kempsville redevelopment initiative. Its thoughtful design blends historical tributes with contemporary amenities. If you're curious about local history, check out the historical plaque that showcases vintage photographs of the area, including shots of the old high school that once stood across the street.
What You'll Find Here
Winding pathways meander through the landscaped grounds, excellent for a leisurely stroll to clear your mind or get some gentle exercise. The pedestrian bridge adds a touch of charm while expanding your walking options. Need a longer walk? The park's short loop can easily be extended by venturing into the surrounding neighborhoods.
At the heart of the park stands a domed pavilion or gazebo, functioning as both a visual centerpiece and a practical shelter for community gatherings. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the "Good Game" statue, installed as a nod to Kempsville Pony Baseball and the area's sporting traditions. It's a fitting tribute, considering this very spot once hosted two baseball fields before its transformation into a park.
Natural Surroundings
The park's centerpiece is a picturesque retention pond that creates a sense of calm amid the urban setting. You can find numerous benches strategically placed around the water - ideal spots to sit, reflect, or simply enjoy the view.
If you're a bird watcher, you're in luck. The pond attracts a variety of feathered visitors, from ducks and geese to the occasional heron. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot turtles basking near the water's edge.
Good to Know
This park offers a peaceful retreat from the surrounding hustle and bustle - a little oasis where you can reconnect with nature. Its well-kept grounds and scenic backdrop have made it a favorite spot for wedding photographers looking to capture that perfect shot.
Note that the park itself doesn't have dedicated parking spaces, restrooms, playgrounds, or picnic areas. However, the commercial area across Princess Anne Road offers dining options if you work up an appetite. If you're bringing little ones along, keep in mind that the park isn't fenced and sits close to busy roads.
