About the Location
History
The park's history dates back to 1879 when the property was acquired by the county and was formerly known as the "Old City Poor Farm." It was developed into a park by the City of Virginia Beach in 1966.
Today, Red Wing Park is renowned for its beautiful gardens and annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which typically takes place in the spring.
Gardens
One of the park's notable features is the Miyazaki Japanese Garden, which offers visitors a tranquil space for reflection and appreciation of Japanese landscaping aesthetics.
The park also houses the Reba S. McClanan Fragrance Garden, established through a collaboration between Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation and the Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia Beach.
In June 2021, Red Wing Park dedicated a new Bee City USA® Pollinator Garden, designed to support pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths. This addition aligns with Virginia Beach's 2020 certification as a Bee City USA affiliate, demonstrating the city's commitment to sustaining pollinators by providing healthy habitats rich in native plants.
