About Red Wing Park in Virginia Beach

Red Wing Park is a expansive 97-acre public park located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The park is known for its diverse natural landscapes and recreational facilities.

The park's history dates back to 1879 when the property was acquired by the county and was formerly known as the "Old City Poor Farm." It was developed into a park by the City of Virginia Beach in 1966. Today, Red Wing Park is renowned for its beautiful gardens and annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which typically takes place in the spring.

One of the park's notable features is the Miyazaki Japanese Garden, which offers visitors a tranquil space for reflection and appreciation of Japanese landscaping aesthetics. The park also houses the Reba S. McClanan Fragrance Garden, established through a collaboration between Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation and the Council of Garden Clubs of Virginia Beach.

In June 2021, Red Wing Park dedicated a new Bee City USA® Pollinator Garden, designed to support pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths. This addition aligns with Virginia Beach's 2020 certification as a Bee City USA affiliate, demonstrating the city's commitment to sustaining pollinators by providing healthy habitats rich in native plants.

The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages, including sports courts, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Its extensive network of shared-use paths provides opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling amid the park's natural beauty.

Red Wing Park serves as a popular destination for both local residents and tourists, offering a blend of natural scenery, recreational activities, and cultural experiences throughout the year.
