About Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park
A Peaceful Entry Point
Tucked away at the corner of Princess Anne and Dam Neck roads in Virginia Beach, Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park is a welcoming entrance to the Princess Anne Commons corridor. What's nice about this spot is how it manages to feel like a quiet retreat despite being just a stone's throw from the Virginia Beach government complex. It's one of those places where you can step away from the bustle without having to drive far out of town.
An Illuminated Art Experience
The Light Garden sculpture is the park's main attraction. Created by internationally-known artist Dale Eldred, this unique piece found a new home here after being relocated from the former Virginia Beach Pavilion.
Imagine glass panels arranged like a grove of trees, catching and refracting sunlight during the day. Come nightfall, the sculpture transforms with blue lighting that creates a dreamy, cloud-like glow throughout the area. It's definitely worth seeing at different times of day if you can.
What You'll Find There
The park comes equipped with three pavilions that provide welcome shade on sunny days. These gazebo areas include grills and picnic tables scattered within the grounds for a casual lunch or small gathering.
One of our favorite features is the paved walking path that winds through the park. Most of it sits under a canopy of trees, making it comfortable for walks even in the summer heat. Just remember to bring some bug spray during insect season - the shade that keeps you cool also attracts the critters.
Kid-Friendly and Accessible
If you're bringing little ones along, you'll appreciate the playground with its large play area. There are swings and various activities suitable for children of different ages. The play area is handicap accessible, but it's worth noting there aren't wheelchair-friendly swings available.
Clean restrooms and water fountains are available during regular park hours - a necessity especially when temperatures climb. The facilities are generally well-maintained.
A Natural Retreat
Despite not being the largest park around, this space offers a peaceful green retreat with plenty of mature trees providing ample shade. It's a simple pleasure to watch the birds and squirrels go about their business in this little pocket of nature.
Dog owners, you can bring your four-legged friends too - just keep them leashed. There are garbage bins within the park for proper waste disposal. The blend of natural elements with practical facilities makes this modest park a versatile spot for locals looking for a quick escape.
A Bit of History
The park as it stands today is actually a renovation of what was formerly known as Princess Anne Park. The transformation has created a serene environment where you can enjoy outdoor activities, appreciate public art, or host small gatherings like birthday celebrations.
