About the Location
Park Overview
Tucked away in Everett, Washington, Howarth Park spreads across 28 acres of coastal beauty. This serene area gives you access to a secluded beach along Possession Sound through three distinct areas, each with its own parking lot.
The views of Puget Sound, Mt. Baker, and Everett's skyline offer a peaceful escape from everyday life - whether you're a local or just passing through.
Explore Different Areas
The south section features sports courts and a playground for children. You'll find restrooms here too, plus a short walking path leading to a viewpoint where you can gaze out at Hat Island in the distance.
Head to the central area if you're up for a bit of adventure - a trail guides you down the hillside to the beach below. For the most direct beach access, the northern parking lot connects to a short trail and pedestrian bridge crossing the railroad tracks.
From there, a spiral staircase with convenient resting platforms takes you down to the shore. Dog owners will appreciate the off-leash dog area at the north end of the beach, where four-legged friends can splash in the water and make new buddies.
Beach Time
The beach here is quite nice. You can spend time beachcombing, watching for wildlife, or taking in the views of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges.
Keep your eyes peeled for eagles, osprey, harbor seals, and even fish swimming in the clear waters. Visit during low tide for an extra treat - the receding water reveals more shoreline dotted with smooth, colorful rocks and interesting driftwood pieces scattered across the sand.
Natural Beauty
Since its establishment in 1971, Howarth Park has preserved a slice of natural wonder. The lower section features a natural marsh and wetland habitat that plays an important role in the local ecosystem.
Nature enthusiasts can wander short trails through forested areas surrounding two small creeks, where lush greenery thrives year-round.
Amenities for Everyone
The park has picnic areas with benches overlooking the water. The upper section includes a large grassy field meant for frisbee, catch, or just sprawling out with a good book.
If you're feeling active, basketball and tennis courts await. Sunset views can be particularly nice as the sun sets over the horizon.
Good to Know
Note that while dogs are welcome at the beach, there are specific leash-only and off-leash sections - just follow the posted signs to keep everyone happy. Some areas follow a pack-in, pack-out policy with limited trash facilities, so be prepared to take your waste with you.
The many stairs leading to the beach might be challenging if you have mobility concerns. As for parking, several lots are available, though they can fill up quickly during sunny weekends and summer days.
