About the Location

A Hidden Natural Retreat

Located in Kent, Washington, Clark Lake Park sprawls across 150 acres of natural beauty. At its heart lies Clark Lake itself - an 8-acre freshwater haven that draws visitors year-round.

If you're looking to escape the concrete jungle for a while, this forested sanctuary offers some much-needed tranquility away from city life. The park never closes, which means you can enjoy a peaceful evening walk or even spread out a blanket for a nighttime picnic under a canopy of stars.

Wander the Trails

A network of walking paths partially circles the lake, inviting you to explore the park's diverse landscapes. These trails meander through shaded forest sections, open meadows, and along the water's edge - well-suited for spotting local wildlife or simply taking in the scenery.

The city is currently working on completing a full loop trail that will eventually let you circle the entire lake. Don't worry about difficulty levels here; the paths are mostly flat and welcoming to everyone from seasoned hikers to families with young children.

Nature's Showcase

What makes Clark Lake special is how its rural, forested character creates a surprising contrast to the developed neighborhoods surrounding it. The park's 338-acre watershed includes most of the park itself plus areas northwest of the lake, helping keep this ecosystem thriving.

On any given day, you might spot ducks paddling across the water or pause at the bridge where, in the right season, clusters of frog eggs offer a fascinating glimpse into the cycle of life. Bird enthusiasts, bring your cameras - this place is a hotspot for feathered residents of all varieties.

Water quality tests from 2003-2004 showed the lake was borderline eutrophic (nutrient-rich), with overall water quality rated fair to good.

Lakeside Access

A dock stretches into the water, giving you a great panoramic view across the entire lake. It's a favorite spot for fishing or simply watching the wildlife go about their day. If you prefer getting closer to the water, a couple of small beaches near the trailhead provide direct access to the shoreline.

In fall, the lake transforms into something magical - its surface often becomes mirror-smooth, reflecting the brilliant autumn colors of the surrounding trees in perfect symmetry.

Growing Greener

In 2022, Kent completed a significant milestone by acquiring the final 17 acres known as the Ruth Property, bringing the park to its current 150-acre size. This purchase wasn't just about adding space - it fulfilled a long-term goal that will allow the city to finish the loop trail around the lake.

With the entire shoreline now under city management, protecting water quality and wildlife habitat should become more effective in the years ahead.

Things to Do

The park offers plenty of ways to enjoy your visit. Try fishing from the dock, explore the hiking trails, or bring your bike for some BMX riding. With extensive trails and open grassy areas, cyclists of various skill levels find plenty to enjoy here. Dog owners are welcome too, but your four-legged friends need to stay leashed on the trails.

Before You Go

Just know that the parking lot isn't huge and can fill up during busy times, so you might want to plan your visit accordingly. There are no restrooms available in the park, so plan ahead for that as well. If you're visiting after rain, watch your step on the wooden walkways - they can get slippery, and trail shoes will serve you better than casual footwear.
