Park Overview
West Fenwick Park is a 27.3-acre community park located in Kent, Washington. The park underwent a significant renovation project that was completed in April 2021, transforming it into a vibrant and inclusive recreational space for residents and visitors.
Unique Playground
The centerpiece of West Fenwick Park is its unique and accessible playground, inspired by the classic children's board game "Chutes and Ladders." This playground, covering over 8,800 square feet, features a combination of synthetic turf surfacing and poured-in-place safety surfacing.
The play area incorporates elevation changes, slides, ladder-like climbing structures, and a spinner, all designed to emulate aspects of the board game while providing an engaging play experience for children of all abilities.
Thoughtful Design
The park's design takes advantage of its hillside location, integrating various elevation changes throughout the space. This topography not only adds visual interest but also allows for creative play opportunities and accessibility features.
A fully ADA-accessible pathway winds through the park, ensuring that visitors of all mobility levels can enjoy the amenities.
Recreational Facilities
In addition to the playground, West Fenwick Park offers a range of recreational facilities. The park includes a multi-use playfield, providing space for various sports and activities.
For more structured play, there are two lighted tennis courts, three handball courts, and a futsal court. The park also features lighted walking and jogging trails, allowing visitors to enjoy outdoor exercise throughout the day.
Community Spaces
For community gatherings and relaxation, the park provides a covered shelter with tables and outdoor grills. This area serves as a focal point for picnics, family gatherings, and small community events.
The central lawn area, while temporarily closed after the renovation to allow for grass establishment, offers additional open space for informal activities and relaxation.
Art and Aesthetics
West Fenwick Park also incorporates elements of public art, adding cultural and aesthetic value to the space. The integration of art pieces enhances the park's visual appeal and provides points of interest for visitors.
The renovation of West Fenwick Park demonstrates a commitment to creating inclusive, multi-functional public spaces that cater to diverse community needs.
