About Kiwanis Park in Renton
Kiwanis Park is a spacious nine-acre neighborhood park located in the Highlands area of Renton, Washington. Originally known as President's Park in the early 1960s, it has since become a popular recreational destination for local residents.
The park underwent a significant 17-month makeover project, reopening on August 8, 2023. This renovation brought several improvements to enhance accessibility and functionality. The park now features accessible entrances and a looped walkway, making it easier for visitors of all abilities to navigate the grounds.
One of the key attractions of Kiwanis Park is its large open lawns, which provide ample space for various activities and relaxation. The park also includes a playground that was replaced during the recent renovation, offering new and exciting play equipment for children.
For sports enthusiasts, Kiwanis Park offers multiple amenities. The ball field received improvements, including a synthetic all-weather surface infield and a natural turf multi-purpose field. The ball field's backstop was updated, and covered dugouts were added to enhance the playing experience. Additionally, the basketball and sports courts were renovated to provide better facilities for visitors.
The park also caters to community gatherings with its new picnic shelter and paved parent plaza. These areas provide ideal spaces for families and groups to come together for outdoor meals and social activities. For convenience, a Portland Loo restroom was installed as part of the renovation.
Safety and aesthetics were also considered in the park's redesign. New park signs were added, and the principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) were incorporated throughout the redesign to enhance security.
Kiwanis Park's renovation was a community effort, funded by various sources including the 2019 Renton Parks Bond funds, Parks Impact Mitigation Fees, 2019 King County Proposition No. 1 Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Levy funding, and local funding sources.
