About the Location
A Hilltop Space with Breathtaking Views
Perched atop historic Renton Hill, Philip Arnold Park spans 10 acres of neighborhood greenspace between Jones Avenue South and Beacon Way SE. What we really like about this park are the views. From here, you can take in spectacular panoramas of Seattle, the Kent valley, Lake Washington, and the Olympic Mountain Range - creating a natural backdrop that makes even a simple afternoon walk feel a bit magical.
The elevated position offers something few other parks can - that feeling of being above it all while still being right in the community. You might find yourself pausing mid-walk to take in the sweeping vista before you.
Fresh Face After Recent Makeover
While the park has been around since the 1960s, it recently got a complete refresh, reopening on December 1, 2023. The renovation brought some welcome additions including an accessible looped walkway and boardwalk that make the park more navigable for everyone. The playground received a complete overhaul, the parking area was renovated, and new picnic shelters and a paved parent plaza were installed.
Practical improvements weren't overlooked either - better drainage and stormwater management systems were put in place. Evening lighting now illuminates the paths, and wheelchair accessibility extends throughout the main areas, making the park more accessible for everyone.
Play and Sport Options Galore
If you're looking to get active, Philip Arnold offers several options. The park houses a baseball field (which you can reserve for a small fee), newly built basketball courts, and tennis courts for those who prefer racquet sports.
Kids have plenty of options here. The playground area features modern equipment including slides, swings, and intricate spider webs for climbing adventures. There's even a separate play zone designed specifically for the little ones. The equipment is clean and well-maintained.
Perfect Picnic Spots
When hunger strikes, head to one of the park's two picnic shelters, available on a first-come basis. The main shelter houses six covered picnic tables plus four additional tables on the side, while a smaller shelter fits four tables.
Shelter #1 sits conveniently close to the playground - a thoughtful touch for families juggling lunch and playtime. Beyond the shelters, there's plenty of open green space where you can spread out a blanket or organize informal gatherings.
Practical Comforts
The park includes clean restroom facilities that, while portable in appearance, offer the comfort of flushable toilets. Hand sanitizer dispensers stationed outside take care of the hygiene basics.
Parking is generally plentiful, however you might need to arrive early on beautiful summer days when the lot tends to fill quickly. For those looking to stretch their legs, a serene walking trail winds through the grounds - it's gentle enough for casual strollers and beginning cyclists alike.
A Name With Meaning
Behind the park's name lies a touching story. Philip Keith Arnold was a fourteen-year-old Boy Scout who tragically died in December 1948 after accidentally being electrocuted while climbing a power pole near what would become the park property. Philip had just been named the best Boy Scout in Renton and was an eighth-grader at Renton Junior-Senior High when the accident occurred.
Community Heart
Philip Arnold Park is a popular gathering place for Renton residents of all ages, offering well-maintained grounds, modern facilities, and incredible views.
