About Sunset Neighborhood Park in Renton

Sunset Neighborhood Park is a 3.2-acre public space located in the Sunset area of Renton, Washington. Situated across from the Renton Highlands Library, this park serves as a catalyst for the redevelopment of the entire Sunset Neighborhood, providing ample open space for the community.

The park features a wide north-south pedestrian walkway, reflecting the connection along Harrington Avenue. It includes an entry plaza leading from the library, equipped with seating and an overhead pergola. Throughout the park, visitors can find various walkways and seating areas, as well as a large lawn area for gathering and recreational activities.

One of the park's unique features is a decorative water mist feature. Unlike typical water fountains or splash pads, this feature emits a fine water mist into the air, using treated and safe drinking water. The mist feature is equipped with a wind sensor that shuts off when the wind is too strong to prevent spraying onto nearby seating areas and playground equipment.

The playground at Sunset Neighborhood Park is a standout attraction. Its centerpiece is the Berliner Neptune XXL, a 30-foot high climbing structure that is the only one of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and one of just four in the United States. Connected to this impressive structure are two Helix Climbing Towers, one 19 feet tall and the other 25 feet tall. These three connected structures are unique to the United States.

For younger children, the park offers a separate play area with tot-friendly equipment, including bucket swings and see-saws. Adults can also enjoy the park's amenities with an outdoor fitness area featuring stainless steel exercise equipment designed for various workouts.

The park's development was completed in two phases. Phase I, which opened on June 16, 2018, included the entry plaza, major walkways, restroom facilities, a rain garden for stormwater detention, and initial seating areas. Phase II, completed on January 28, 2021, added the impressive playground structures and additional amenities.

Sunset Neighborhood Park serves as an important community space, offering recreational opportunities and a gathering place for residents of all ages. Its design and features make it a valuable asset to the Renton community, promoting outdoor activities and social interaction in a well-planned urban environment.
