About the Location
Historical Significance
Tonkin Park stands on the site of Renton's first mercantile store. This store was operated by James Tonkin and his son Josiah "Si" Tonkin, from whom the park derives its name.
After three generations of Tonkin family ownership, the land was generously donated to the City of Renton for use as a public park.
Park Features
One of the park's notable features is a brick and concrete bandshell, which serves as a venue for special events. The park is also home to Renton's largest tulip poplar tree, an impressive specimen measuring over 15 feet in circumference.
This significant tree is included in the city's Historical Tree Tour, adding an element of natural history to the park's appeal.
Size and Location
This small urban park covers just one-third of an acre, making it a postage stamp-sized oasis in the heart of the city. It is situated just southwest of the downtown post office.
Despite its small size, Tonkin Park offers visitors a tranquil space to enjoy nature within the urban environment. The park features lush turf, providing a pleasant green area for relaxation and casual recreation.
