Park Overview

Nestled in north central Seattle, Green Lake Park spans a generous 323 acres of urban greenery. At its heart lies the freshwater Green Lake, a glacial remnant from about 50,000 years ago that covers 259 acres and reaches depths of 30 feet. This natural area is particularly popular when Seattle's weather warms up.

The Perfect Loop

Encircling the lake is a 2.8-mile paved path that's become something of a Seattle institution. Whether you're into morning jogs, leisurely afternoon strolls, or rollerblading, this flat, well-maintained trail offers beautiful lakeside views in every season. Just a heads-up: the inner path is foot-traffic only due to its popularity, but cyclists can find dedicated lanes nearby.

Splash and Paddle

When summer hits, Green Lake really shines with its two swimming beaches where you can cool off when Seattle's rare but glorious hot days arrive. If fishing's more your thing, cast a line for trout, largemouth bass, or smallmouth bass in the designated spots around the lake. Want to get on the water instead? Spring and summer bring opportunities to rent kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes for some peaceful lake exploration.

Get Your Game On

Green Lake Park doesn't just do water activities - it's packed with options for the land-loving athlete too. You'll discover athletic fields, tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, and even a charming pitch-and-putt golf course. The Green Lake Community Center adds indoor amenities including a swimming pool and hosts various community programs. And for the little ones, playgrounds scattered around the park offer endless entertainment possibilities.

Natural Wonders

Beyond the recreational facilities, the park unfolds into grassy expanses excellent for picnicking or simply lounging with a good book. The diverse trees and plants create homes for local wildlife, making it a surprisingly rich ecosystem for an urban park. Bring your binoculars if you're into birdwatching - waterfowl are abundant, from ducks and geese to majestic herons. At dusk, you might even catch glimpses of bats swooping over the water. In the middle of the lake, Duck Island represents a protected bird sanctuary, adding to the park's ecological value.

Convenience and Comfort

You'll find restroom facilities conveniently placed along the walking path, along with plenty of picnic tables and benches for lakeside breaks. If you're planning a bigger gathering, BBQ pits near the playgrounds make cookouts easy. Need refreshments? There's a small café in the park, or you can venture into the surrounding Green Lake neighborhood where restaurants and coffee shops await within easy walking distance.

A Piece of Seattle History

Green Lake Park has evolved considerably over time. In the early 1900s, the lake level was lowered to create additional parkland around its edges. History buffs might appreciate the Bathhouse Theater, a historic lakeside building now home to the Seattle Public Theater. Today, Green Lake continues its legacy as a popular community space, blending natural beauty with recreational possibilities in the heart of the city.
