About the Location
A Piece of Seattle History
Positioned in Seattle's landscape, Kinnear Park has been quietly witnessing the city's evolution since 1887, making it one of Seattle's oldest green spaces. This 14.1-acre haven wasn't always public - it was a gift from George Kinnear, a real estate developer with an appreciation for natural spaces.
Walk through the park today and you'll still encounter landscape elements dating back to the late 19th century - little touches of history that have earned this space its status as a Seattle landmark for over a century.
Two Parks in One
Kinnear Park plays a bit of a dual personality game with its distinct upper and lower sections. Up top, you'll come across open, inviting grassy areas and walking paths that lead to absolutely breathtaking panoramas of Puget Sound and the majestic Olympic Mountains in the distance.
Venture down to the lower portion and the vibe shifts completely - here, the park transforms into a more densely wooded sanctuary with winding trails that meander through mature trees. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the glacial boulders and native big leaf maples that dot the landscape. Just be prepared for some ups and downs - literally - as ramps and stairs connect the different elevations around the park.
Views Worth the Visit
The views might be the main reason many people seek out this park. The upper section offers excellent vistas of Elliott Bay and Puget Sound.
There's something special about finding a quiet bench here, sitting down, and just taking in those sweeping panoramas in the peaceful atmosphere that somehow exists despite being in the heart of a major city.
Get Moving or Just Relax
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just unwind, Kinnear Park offers several options. The tennis courts welcome both traditional players and pickleball enthusiasts alike. Families appreciate the children's playground with its swings and expansive grassy areas where kids can run free.
Feeling hungry after all that activity? The upper section houses numerous picnic tables and benches where you can enjoy an outdoor meal with a side of incredible views. Public restrooms can be found beneath the balcony picnic area, but facilities may vary in availability and condition.
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Dog parents, take note - Kinnear Park features a fenced off-leash dog area on the western side. While it's not the largest dog park you'll ever see, it provides a safe space for your furry friends to stretch their legs and socialize.
Many locals have made this park part of their regular dog-walking routine, appreciating the quieter atmosphere for daily strolls. If your dog is the adventurous type who enjoys getting a little dirty, the sometimes muddy lower trails might actually be a highlight rather than a deterrent.
Trails for the Urban Explorer
The network of trails winding through Kinnear Park offers a fantastic mini-escape from city life, particularly the long wooded path that threads through the lower section. You don't need to drive hours outside the city to experience a refreshing nature walk.
Keep your eyes open as you explore - the trails reveal fascinating natural features including various mushroom species and moss-draped trees that showcase the quintessential Pacific Northwest ecosystem in all its damp, verdant glory.
