About Madison Park
Breathtaking Waterfront Escape
Tucked along the western shore of Lake Washington, Madison Park is a little touch of waterfront heaven in Seattle's charming Madison Park neighborhood. This lakeside park offers gorgeous views across the water to Medina and Bellevue. If you're an early riser, watching the sunrise here with coffee in hand is beautiful on clear mornings.
Beach Vibes & Swimming Spot
The park's swimming beach is one of its main draws, complete with a designated swimming area where lifeguards keep watch daily from noon to 7PM throughout summer until Labor Day. The sandy shoreline is well-suited for sprawling out with a good book or just soaking up some vitamin D.

A highlight of this swimming spot is the diving boards - including a high dive that's popular with swimmers of all ages. There's also a swim-to dock that adds a fun destination for those wanting to paddle out from shore.
Green Spaces to Unwind
The park covers 8.3 acres in total and is split into two distinct sections by 43rd Avenue E. The eastern section is where you'll find the swimming beach and public dock, while the western side holds the playground, open playfield, and tennis courts - a straightforward layout worth knowing if you're heading straight for the beach or the courts.
Spacious, well-maintained grassy areas spread around the park, offering ideal spots for impromptu picnics or lazy afternoon lounging. These open expanses are great for people-watching or simply gazing out at the lake's shimmering surface.

Kids will make a beeline for the playground with its array of equipment designed for the younger crowd. With slides, swings, climbing challenges, and even a thrilling zipline, it keeps children 3-8 entertained for hours (though older kids seem to enjoy it just as much). Tennis enthusiasts can also hit the tennis courts that are open to the public - just bring your rackets and balls for an impromptu match.
Practical Comforts
You'll discover restrooms and changing areas conveniently located near the beach, along with shower facilities where swimmers can rinse off the lake water before heading home.
One heads-up: shade can be scarce near the beach and playground areas, so remember to pack sunscreen and maybe a beach umbrella on those sunny Seattle days (yes, they do happen!).
Four-Legged Friends Welcome
Dog owners can bring their leashed companions to explore most areas of the park, although note that pups aren't allowed on the beach itself. The paths and grassy sections make for pleasant dog-walking routes.
Neighborhood Gathering Spot
Madison Park is a green space where locals and visitors gather year-round. Its location right by the neighborhood's commercial district means you can easily combine your park visit with other activities.
After working up an appetite swimming or playing, you're just steps away from the area's cafes, restaurants, and shops. Many parkgoers make a day of it by grabbing lunch or ice cream at nearby establishments.
A Bit of History
The park has a longer history as a public destination than you might expect. For the first 19 years after it opened, the Madison Street Cable Railway ran along Madison Street from Elliott Bay all the way to the park, making it an easily accessible lakeside escape for Seattle residents.
For those arriving by water, ferry service once crossed Lake Washington between Madison Park and Kirkland, operating from the early 1880s all the way until 1950. The opening of the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge in 1940 significantly reduced demand for the crossing, and once tolls were removed in 1949, the route couldn't sustain itself and was discontinued.
Thoughtful Layout
The park strikes a nice balance between natural elements and practical amenities. While certain areas offer tree-shaded retreats, the open spaces provide room for frisbee games or just sprawling out on a blanket.
During winter, Madison Park transforms into a more contemplative space - a place where you can bundle up, face the brisk wind, and enjoy Lake Washington's moody beauty without the summer crowds.
