About Leschi Park

A Lush Lakeside Haven

Found in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood lies an 18.5-acre gem called Leschi Park. Named after Chief Leschi of the Nisqually tribe, this public park offers that perfect blend of natural beauty and recreational spots right along the western shore of Lake Washington.

The heart of the park is a gentle, grassy hillside that cascades down toward Lakeside Avenue S. This green space is home to a variety of trees, including some exotic species planted by early park gardeners and an impressive Giant Sequoia. If you're timing your visit, spring brings a magical display of cherry blossoms, while fall transforms the park into a canvas of warm colors.

Pathways With a View

Winding trails let you explore the park's rolling landscape with views of Lake Washington, the Cascade Mountains, and on clear days, Mount Rainier in the distance. These paths are great for a casual stroll or walking your four-legged friend - a little nature therapy in the midst of city life.

Planning an event? Make a reservation at this park

The eastern edge near the lake features a small, welcoming lawn area with benches where you can sit back and take in the peaceful lake views. Many park-goers simply bring a blanket, spread out on the grass, and soak in some sunshine and serenity.

For Water Lovers

Got a boat? Leschi Park features a convenient boat launch and moorage facilities that give you direct access to the recreational playground that is Lake Washington.

Even if you're not hitting the water yourself, the waterfront area makes an excellent spot to watch the occasional air shows and special events that take place over the lake - front row seats to some pretty spectacular displays.

Get Active or Just Relax

If you're in the mood for something active, you'll come across a tennis court ready for your best serves and a playground where kids can burn off energy and make new friends.

The park also offers welcoming picnic areas and open spaces that are just right for tossing a frisbee or enjoying an impromptu game of catch. Planning a family gathering or meetup with friends? This is your spot. And yes, there are clean restrooms available - always a plus for longer visits.

Beyond the Park

One of the nice things about Leschi Park is its location near several restaurants and shops in the neighborhood. When you're ready for a bite to eat or want to browse local stores, they're all within walking distance. Street parking is usually available, but be prepared for a bit of a hunt during busy times, as the streets within the park area tend to be on the narrow side.

A Glimpse Into the Past

Long before European settlement, the Duwamish people knew this area by the Lushootseed name s7ayá7oos, meaning "Changes-Its-Face." The name referred to a massive, supernatural horned snake believed to inhabit the site - a legend that speaks to how significant this stretch of shoreline was in Indigenous tradition.

What many don't realize is that Leschi Park has roots stretching back to the late 19th century, when it began its life as a private amusement park and zoo - in fact, it was home to Seattle's first zoo. The animals were eventually relocated to Woodland Park in 1903, where the city zoo still operates today. The park was also once the terminus of a cable car line connecting Leschi to Pioneer Square, a route that ran for over 50 years before closing in 1940, and for generations of Seattle residents, riding that cable car down to the lake was a familiar outing.

The waterfront itself has a busy past as well. From roughly 1890 to 1910, steamboats regularly docked here, making it one of the more active points on Lake Washington. Before the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge was built, a cross-lake ferry also departed from Leschi to the Eastside, much like the service that ran from Madison Park to the north.
